Zoo Ambassador – Seasonal
Summary:
The primary focus of the Zoo Ambassador position is creating a fun, positive, and educational experience for all of the guests who visit the Lehigh Valley Zoo. The Zoo Ambassador is responsible for the supervision of general volunteers and the ongoing training of Docent volunteers. Position involves walking throughout the zoo grounds, standing for long periods of time, working indoors and outdoors in various types of weather conditions, and other physical tasks. The Zoo Ambassador is the face of our zoo so must be able to answer all guest questions in a helpful and courteous manner. The Zoo Ambassador is also responsible to report general observations of the LVZoo's interactive exhibit animals to the Animal Care team. This position reports directly to the Volunteer and Events Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
- Provide exceptional guest service at all times by: o Giving a warm welcome to every guest. o Being polite, professional, and informative. o Having a friendly, outgoing, enthusiastic atitude about your job and the LVZoo. o Going the extra mile for every guest, every time, to ensure a positive experience.
- Train and supervise Docent volunteers working at interactive exhibits and activities. Training should include: o Safety protocols for the interactive exhibits (for guests, animals, and staff/volunteers) o General knowledge of animals at interactive exhibits as well as general zoo accomplishments/conservation efforts. o How to properly and politely answer guests questions (and who to contact if they are unable to answer) as well as expected behaviors/interactions (with guests, animals, staff/volunteers) while they are volunteering at the interactive exhibits.
- Educate guests in interactive exhibit areas on:
o Species natural histories o The LV Zoo's conservation efforts pertaining to interactive exhibits o Educate guests about event/promotional materials
- Observe, evaluate, and report animal behavior and conditions to the Animal Care department.
- Competent handling of cash.
- Familiarity of the LVZoo's history, it’s current accomplishments, and future goals.
- Work weekends/nights during the Winter Light Spectacular.
- Other duties as assigned by Zoo management.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Excellent communication skills
- Comfortable speaking to small and large groups of people
- Demonstrate ability to act in a friendly, outgoing, polite, and professional manor at all times to guests and staff
- Demonstrate a familiarity with natural history and animal behavior and a willingness to continue education
- Weekend, holiday, and some evening availability required
- Possess valid driver! s license/have reliable transportation
- Able to follow written and oral direction, exercise good judgment, and apply safety precautions applicable to the work
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
