JOB SUMMARY: The Director, Safety is responsible for ensuring the safety of the workplace and oversees the continuous development of the company’s total safety culture by coordinating, administering, and implementing comprehensive safety and training programs.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: The Director, Safety is responsible for supervising employees in the safety department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Develops, manages, and implements strategies for the safety programs including deployment of Human Performance tools and best in class policies and procedures to eliminate serious injuries and at-risk behaviors.
Responsible for having knowledge regarding federal and state safety laws to ensure compliance with regulations.
Continuously monitors regulatory changes as they relate to the industry including Z133 and OSHA.
Responsible for analyzing safety, training, and accident data to inform improvement strategies.
Leads, directs, plans work schedules, assigns and delegates work, and evaluates Safety Specialists’ performance.
Conducts incident investigations when warranted, determines probable cause, and makes recommendations for corrective actions.
Provides appropriate reporting to senior management team with trending analysis and tangible programs/recommendations to effectively improve overall safety performance.
Collaborates with the COO and the Operations VP’s on new strategic initiatives that relate to safety and training.
Conducts site visits with Safety Specialists and Operations to promote a safer work environment.
Attends and participates in regional/ divisional quarterly safety meetings as necessary.
Provides professional representation to customers and regulatory entities when required.
Participates in and contributes to industry trade associations on behalf of the company.
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Safety Engineering, Occupational Health, and Safety, or other related field.
A minimum of five years of experience in a safety leadership role.
Experience with Human Performance or Resiliency Engineering preferred.
TECHNOLOGY, EQUIPMENT & TOOLS:
Proficient with standard office equipment i.e., computer, phones, scanner, fax and copier.
Proficient with Microsoft Office including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook.
Proficient with Smart Phones and tablets.
Proficient with industry tools and equipment used in utility line clearance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Possess effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work with a variety of customers, both internal and external.
Ability to understand how to interpret regulatory guidelines.
Possess effective leadership skills.
Ability to function as a member of a governing committee.
Proficient presentation skills to effectively deliver a high-quality presentation to a wide variety of audiences.
Knowledge of vegetation management or utility environment preferred.
