What are the responsibilities and job description for the Preschool Teacher position at Life Covenant Church?
POSITION SUMMARY: Provide an educational environment where preschool children have the opportunity to develop cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills. Provides a lesson plan by which classes are conducted. Teach and nurture children in a loving and caring environment that is safe, comfortable, and healthful in order to enhance children’s growth and Christian development. Help each child learn about him/herself, our world, and God at his/her own pace and in a loving and supportive environment. Lead parent volunteers or other volunteers as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Respect and Unconditionally Love Each Child: Each child is uniquely make (Gen. 1:27, Ps. 139:13-17) and should be unconditionally accepted (Matt. 19:14). Show a genuine interest in each child (1 Peter 2:17). Express acceptance through giving your smiles, enthusiasm, encouraging words and friendly, but firm guidance. Be creative and patient as you share God’s love with the children.Gently hold, soothe and reassure children who are upset and need comfort or redirection.
- Promote Good Hygiene: Take pride in providing a healthy, safe environment for children. Follow all preschool guidelines regarding personal hygiene (including hand washing), disinfecting (including toys and equipment) and preventing the spread of illness.
- Promote Learning and Development: Create curriculum and implement early childhood activities appropriate to the age, social, physical and intellectual developmental level of the children. Expose children to Christian teaching, literature, music, art, creative play, science, nature and math. Encourage children to explore, ask questions, and try new experiences. Record and compile an individual assessment for each child’s development on a quarterly basis and share these with the child’s parent through a conference (twice yearly) and given directly to them (twice yearly).
- Relationship Development: Work closely with preschool coordinator, teaching assistant, parents and volunteers to make the LCC preschool program ministry a positive experience for all children and parents. Develop and maintain trusting relationships with the children, their families and volunteers. Conduct parent-teacher conferences twice yearly to share with parents their child’s progress and to discuss any concerns you or they may have.
- Classroom Safety and Security: Maintain accurate classroom forms; including daily attendance forms. Responsible for following all safety/security policies and completion of incident reports.
Fostering a safe environment for children is of the highest importance.
- Maintenance and Cleaning: Responsible for the upkeep and neat arrangement of the classroom and preschool hallways. Spot cleaning of classroom countertops, tabletops, floors, walls and sinks and faucet area.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development accreditation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Superior interpersonal and communication skills with children, parents and volunteers.
- Current certification in child/infant CPR and basic First Aid.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to safely lift 40 pounds. Life Covenant Church is not able to accommodate applicants who are not able to meet this requirement.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Ability to evaluate, design, and implement curriculum.
- Records maintenance skills.
- Knowledge of early childhood education programs and techniques.
- Knowledge of child development theory and practice.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people.
- Ability to provide activities for children that encourage healthy growth.
- Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.
- Ability to persuade and influence others.
- Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for children.
- Ability to exercise control and maintain classroom discipline.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: This is a part-time position with regularly scheduled hours. The classroom hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:45am to 11:45am; Tuesday and Thursday from 8:45am to 11:15am. This person must arrive early enough to be well prepared for each day. Time will also be required twice during the school year for parent-teacher conferences. This position runs from mid-August through May. The LCC Preschool follows the Helena School district calendar concerning holidays.
RELATIONSHIPS: Works with preschool coordinator, parents and other preschool volunteers.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Works with the preschool coordinator on a periodic basis and with the LCC Staff
Team and is accountable to the LCC Leadership Team.
EVALUATION: Following the 90-day Probationary Period employee will receive a performance review. After completion of the Probationary Period, performance reviews will take place periodically conducted by the preschool coordinator and the Pastor of Discipleship & Administration. Performance will be evaluated on ability to carry out job duties.
COMPENSATION: Salary dependent upon experience. No benefits are available at this time. Personal/sick leave will be limited to five days per school year.
