Summary:
Plans evaluates and directs preparation of diets for patients including pediatric adolescent adult and geriatric patients as prescribed by physicians and counsels patients in principles of normal and therapeutic nutrition. Performs other related duties as required.

Possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients of all age groups to include pediatric adolescent adult and geriatric patient:
Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development.
Demonstrates the ability to assess data reflective of the patient�s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient�s requirements relative to his or her age specific needs.
Develops and implements age specific diet plans.
Consults with physicians and nursing staff to monitor and evaluate patient�s nutritional status during hospitalization.
Interviews patients to obtain information regarding food preferences and habits for guidance in planning diets.
Makes appropriate changes to patient�s menu or meal pattern to promote optimal and quality nutrition.
Provides nutritional counseling diet planning and diet instruction considering age-specific requirements such as desires motivation to learn physical/cognitive limitations and language barriers for

Provides proper and accurate documentation of diet history nutritional assessments visitations and diet instructions in patient medical record.
Confirms special diet orders and evaluates patient�s need for nutritional intervention within 48 hours.
Appropriately transfers all required nutritional information to patient floor Kardex.
Regularly monitors patients with nutritional problems and initiates nutritional intervention if needed.
Provides direction to Dietetic Assistants to modify patient menus in accordance with diet orders and age specific requirements and periodically checks menus to ensure accuracy.
Participates in interdisciplinary patient care conferences to discuss patient�s nutritional therapy plan.
Plans organizes and conducts group dietetic educational programs for patients students nurses nursing personnel and Food & Nutrition Department staff.
Participates in the review and revision of the Diet Guide and Nutritional Support Manual as directed.

Qualifications:
Completion of a Baccalaureate program in Food Science and Nutrition.
Registration with the American Dietetic Association and Rhode Island licensure as a Dietitian/Nutritionist is required
