Title: Junior Story Editor
Job Type: Full Time (we use a 10 hour per day, 4 day per week schedule)
Days: Thursday - Sunday
Hours: 7:00 am - 6:00 pm PST
Location: Phoenix, AZ

Responsibilities:
- Review 15-20 stories per day, averaging 400-800 words each
- Fact check ages, dates, historical events, locations, names of businesses and groups, numbers, personal quotes, social media posts, titles, attributions, factual claims, etc.
- Copy edit for grammar, spelling, typos, AP and house style
- Story edit for comprehension and cohesion
- Embed media as necessary
- Review headlines and marketing copy for accuracy and spelling
- Ensure the text conforms to The Western Journal’s house style
- Participate in brainstorming and other collaborative meetings
- Assist in maintaining editorial calendar
- Provide regular constructive feedback to writers and assignment editors
- Take on additional team responsibilities, such as training new writers, issuing corrections, editing syndicated articles, etc.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, History, or similar field with high writing and editing requirements
- Excellent written English, including good spelling and grammar
- A meticulous approach to work and an eye for detail
- The ability to maintain high quality work while meeting tight deadlines
- Superior communication skills and a proven ability to collaborate
- Proficiency in online content management tools (experience working in WordPress or directly with basic HTML a plus)
- Familiarity with The Associated Press Stylebook a plus
- Interest in and knowledge of current event, news, and politics a big plus
- Ability to work weekends
