Brief Job Summary
This position is responsible for maintaining County owned properties. This position is essential. Employee is required to report to work during period of severe weather. Job Responsibilities
o Maintains lawns at all county buildings; mows, edges, trims weeds, mulches.
o Supervises community service workers.
o Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
o Applies fertilizer and irrigates lawns and plants; aerates soil; seeds lawns.
o Prunes shrubs and trees.
o Installs new plantings.
o Removes leaves from lawns, parking lots, and walkways.
o Removes ice, snow, leaves, trash, and debris from sidewalks.
o Operates equipment such as a chainsaw, large riding mowers, bush hog, and backhoe.
o Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
o Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
o Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one or two years.
o Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Knowledge and Skills Required - o Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in municipal grounds maintenance.
o Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to grounds maintenance.
o Knowledge of county and safety policies and procedures.
o Knowledge of the operation and preventive maintenance of a variety of grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
o Knowledge of plant materials, planting times, and planting methods.
o Skill in the operation of various types of lawn maintenance equipment.
o Skill in the maintenance of various types of equipment.
o Skill in oral and written communication.
Complexity/Scope of Work
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light or heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed outdoors, where the employee may be exposed to hot, cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
