Position Title: Engineering Manager
Function: Engineering
Reports To: Plant Manager
FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Summary:
Responsible for leading and supervising a team of engineers as they develop, test, modify, and create solutions for products, processes, and technical issues.
The Engineering Manager typically is responsible for multiple sites and individual Plant Engineers at each site.
Coordinates existing and new product manufacturing and design transfer.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
Technical:
- Leads new product development, and manufacturing process layouts, incorporating all aspects of the products design criteria.
- Hires, trains, and mentors' other engineers and support staff.
- Verifies technical accuracy of all engineering department work.
- Drives improvement activities across facility. Assists and directs other engineers on their improvement activities.
- Identify, assess, and participate in continuous improvement opportunities using proven technical engineering tools and programs.
- Creates detailed plans and timelines to accomplish key projects and goals.
- Assist in Quotation preparation for sales as requested, including part entry, proper method of manufacturing creation and coordination with scheduling for lead time prior.
- Lead Design for Manufacturability (DFM) analysis / is the on-site expert for Engineering on new & existing orders.
- Plans and establishes engineering schedules and follow up performance against estimates.
- Coordinates new equipment purchase and installation.
- Investigates operational problems affecting production and deals with them in a systematic, methodical manner with the appropriate sense of urgency.
- Utilizes MRP knowledge and experience within manufacturing processes.
- Preparing manufacturing documentation required for product manufacturing.
- Co-coordinates Key Projects as required.
- Provide manufacturing data for project tracking, improvement, and accountability.
- Works with engineering and other departments to identify ways to reduce production costs of legacy and new products.
- Understanding and analyzing graphs and statistics and other complex information.
- Works with regulatory bodies to ensure safety, environmental and design standards are met.
- Other duties as assigned.
Leadership:
- Provides direction and mentoring to engineering group.
- Effectively coordinate resources within Engineering to accommodate production schedules, manage project plans and ensure appropriate communication.
- Lead and/or participate in pre-production planning and post-production assessment processes.
Communication:
- Maintain effective communication with internal stakeholders regarding status, timing and production or manufacturing issues impacting the project.
- Communicate with others throughout the organization to provide regular updates
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or other related Engineering disciplines (Master's degree preferred). Requires more than five years' experience as a Project Manager or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have previous management experience, directing and managing a manufacturing engineering department and manufacturing/mechanical engineering employees.
- Strong knowledge of CNC milling/turning and secondary operations such as but not limited to burring, blasting, polishing, and passivation
- Disciplined in cad software, expert in use of Solidworks.
- Working knowledge of Quality analytics tools including but not limited to SPC, FMEA, PFMEA preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
- Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints.
- Excellent knowledge of GD&T and its application
- Working knowledge of Value Stream Mapping and Lead Time Reduction.
- ASQ certification and PE (Professional Engineer) certifications are desirable.
- Blackbelt accreditation and Lean Certification preferred
Language Skills: Excellent communication skills
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
- Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
- Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
- Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
