What are the responsibilities and job description for the Career Coach position at Linn-Benton Community College?
The Inclusive Career Advancement Program (ICAP) Career Coach serves Linn and Benton Counties to increase qualifying students’ and potential students’ connections to federal, state, local, and accessibility resources through deepened local and campus partnerships; expanded outreach and support for rural areas; and one-on-one student support. This position will provide a link between clients working with Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation and college training programs in close partnership with the colleges’ Center for Accessibility Resources department.
Required Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Position requires an associate’s degree from an accredited institution with coursework in Psychology, Education, Business, Social Work, Human Services, or other related areas plus a minimum of two years of full-time professional experience in case management, crisis intervention, employment services, recruitment, training programs, social work or related experience.
Abilities: Must be able to work effectively with individuals with disabilities. Ability to learn quickly and assimilate information, to be flexible, utilize strong communication skills, recognize when client/student referral is appropriate or necessary, and work independently as a team member. Bicultural/multicultural skills sufficient to select appropriate behaviors, values and attitudes within different cultures during interactions with others. Requires the ability to interact professionally with all campus partners.
Experience working with adult learners with disabilities and working in a higher education setting and/or experience providing career coaching and job readiness resources to individuals is preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Must be able to operate a computer or other office equipment. Requires ability to perceive written and oral words and numbers. Must be able to communicate effectively by phone, in person, and electronically.
Work is typically performed in a busy office, interacting with people who may be experiencing a period of high stress, impacted by their disabilities, who are highly agitated or in extreme, difficult circumstances. Requires travel to communities within Linn and Benton Counties. Extensive time is spent working at a computer. Occasional weekend and evening work may be scheduled.
Coaching/Case Management
- Receives, screens, and processes participant referrals from campus and partner agencies.
- Assists ICAP students in developing initial Individual Success Plan, addressing short- and long-term academic and career goals.
- Provides one-on-one career and academic coaching and works closely with various campus and community partners including Vocational Rehabilitation, WorkSource Oregon, and the wider statewide ICAP.
- Meets with students regularly to monitor progress and provide individual success coaching.
Social Service Networking
- Maintains relationships with Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation and other ICAP providers in the state; attends regular community partner meetings.
- Works with partners to develop appropriate referral systems and processes.
- Delivers presentations about program services, qualifications, and expectations to prospective students, community organizations, and on-campus partners.
Job Development
- Develops, monitors, and tracks community-based employment opportunities for participants in ICAP.
- Coaches students individually on job search strategies (i.e. interviewing, resume writing, job applications, cover/thank you letters), providing support and encouragement in the job search process; may participate in classroom presentations on job search, resumes and labor trends.
Data Tracking
- Collects and enters appropriate participant data into databases for local, state and federal reporting.
- Collects, coordinates, and submits data reports to the Opportunity Programs Director and/or Coordinator.
- Maintains appropriate records including student case files and documentation, training site/goal development, labor market research, and attendance.
- Enters case notes into college approved electronic records system and other student tracking functions.
