SLPA - Language Disorder and Dyslexia Specialist (Contract Position) — Heber, UT

We strive to be a resource for parents while providing individualized and engaging instruction to every student. Our approach is grounded in Orton-Gillingham principles and instructional standards. We incorporate materials, resources, and strategies gained through our teaching experience, academic language training, and education in speech therapy to enrich students and their families. We have experience working with children who have literacy and language differences such as dyslexia & processing disorders, as well as those with co-occurring difficulties such as ADHD and autism. We not only help students increase their reading and language skills, but we help them see their individual strengths & build confidence in their abilities.

Literacy Utah is seeking an SLPA contractor to join our team as a literacy specialist for our before & after-school tutoring services. This Literacy Specialist candidate will be a self-motivated, responsible, fun, engaging, creative, collaborative teacher, and strong communicator. This person will also have a strong will to learn and grow professionally.

Responsabilities:

  • Teaches 10-20 hours a week of 1-1 and small group sessions in-person (Heber City, UT). Daytime and after-school hours available.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to teach in-person in Heber City, UT to be considered for this position. This is not a remote listing.
  • Record necessary data and update parents after each session and keeps track of student attendance.
  • Reads, interalizes, and responds to weekly bulletin and monthly emails.
  • Sends weekly email updates to families in their caseload with students progress through their respective program
  • Meets 1-1 with the Director of Literacy Utah once a month
  • Responds to parent & team communication within 24 hours Monday-Thursday and reaches out to the Director for support if need be.
  • Manages necessary action items for cancelling, rescheduling and/or crediting clients for missed sessions.
  • Administers provided assessments to each student in their caseload at the beginning and conclusion of each semester and updates progress monitoring documentation accordingly.
  • Records updated reading level and progress through the respective program in the student's Portfolio and sends to parents at the conclusion of each semester.
  • If not certified in an Orton Gillinham program, commits to work with a mentor teacher while working on official certification process. (certification cost covered by Literacy Utah).
  • Understands teaching hours for any practicum will be held outside of paid teaching hours and scheduled independently

Skills & Competencies: 

  • Must have a Communicative Disorders Bachelors
  • Experienced working with Language disorders & phonemic awarenessphonics. Structured literacy and phonics experience a plus.
  • Wilson, Barton, OG, S.P.I.R.E (etc.) certified or willing to become certified within the first 12 months of employment (Literacy Utah will cover this cost. The specialist will complete all necessary elements of the certification process outside of paid teaching hours)
  • Enjoys students and seeks to see them grow in their literacy and understanding of self
  • Great understanding of Gmail Google Drive for admin tasks
  • Mastery of Zoom and many of its functions on your device
  • Behavior management skills and patience in 1-1 and small group settings
  • Deep understanding of the mission Literacy Utah

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Hourly rate: ContractPay: $25.00 - $40.00 per hour depending on qualifications and experience.
