Job Qualifications
- The teacher is expected to obtain the 45-hour certificate as part of basic licensing requirements within 6 months of employment.
- He or she should have a working knowledge of age-appropriate behavior, positive discipline techniques and activities in order to care for the children in the center.
- A working knowledge of State Regulations is mandatory.
- The teacher must be able to lift and carry a child in their classroom and be able to get down to the floor level so as to interact with the children and to be able to get up again with ease.
Job Training
- The teacher is required to complete at least 24 hours of training each anniversary year (per State Regulations) if they work more than 20 hours per week. This should include CPR and First Aid Training.
- The teacher is responsible for organizing his/her training needs on www.nmels.org website.
Essential Job Functions
Communications:
- Maintenance of confidentiality of financial and personal information in relation to all children and School Staff Members is mandatory. Concerns about children and families should not be discussed in the classroom when other parents of children are present. Failure to maintain this level of confidentiality is grounds for immediate dismissal.
- Plan, supervise, and implement the educational program for the class in accordance with the policies and philosophy of LPLC and FOCUS regulations.
- Include developmentally appropriate Early Childhood Education practices to promote the spiritual, physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development of each child.
- Prepare weekly lesson plans and submit to Director prior to the week teaching.
- Maintain a nurturing and safe environment for children.
- Conduct daily experiences to meet the needs of all children.
- Record and maintain files on each child.
- Communicate with an assistant or volunteer in a timely fashion for all materials to be ready for implementation.
- Coordinate cleaning and sanitizing of classroom materials.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, training sessions and planning activities.
- Document a child’s behavior when necessary.
- Parent communications should be open, honest, and positive and occur as needed.
Classroom Management, Health and Safety
- The teacher is responsible for the overall physical, social, emotional, and cognitive wellbeing of the children in the classroom.
- He/she must be able to monitor and assess the children’s well-being and respond appropriately to the children’s needs.
- The teacher oversees the health and safety of each child in the classroom including the indoor and outdoor environment.
- The teacher ensures that routine tasks such as toileting, diapering, eating, sleeping, and dressing are handled in a relaxed and individual manner. The teacher must perform these functions as needed.
- The teacher will be responsible for communicating to the director a list of supplies needed to maintain the weekly classroom activities.
Additional Functions
- Assist the director with other duties as necessary.
- Fill in for other staff when requested by director as necessary, during staff shortages.
- Be responsible for reporting any necessary maintenance needs or repairs to the director.
- Notify administration of any unusual occurrences or concerns.
- Participate in LPLC events.
- Attend trainings or events for LPLC on weekends or during hours in which LPLC is normally closed and must complete all trainings available on www.nmels.org, please see the list of trainings provided by Director.
