According to the International Reading Association, “coaching” is an “ongoing consistent support to teachers for the implementation and instruction components. It is nonthreatening and supportive, not evaluative. It gives a sense of how good professional development is. It also affords the opportunity to see it work with students” (Shaw, 2007).
Description and Goals:
As part of South Lane’s overall MTSS plan, the Literacy Coach will support K-8 staff in the implementation of the district’s literacy goals. The Coach will work directly with teachers in a school providing classroom-based demonstrations, collaborative and one-on-one support, and facilitating teacher inquiry and related professional development. The Coach will focus on enhancing teachers’ ability to provide instruction that builds students’ sense of engagement in the ownership of learning. The Coach will also work with administrators and teachers to collect and analyze data, interpret, and use it to guide instructional decisions. As deemed necessary by the building administrator, some instructional duties may also be required, but to the greatest degree possible, not to exceed 20% of the coach’s time.
Responsibilities:
- Guide teachers to collect and analyze data and develop action plans in response to determined student needs.
- Provide individualized, classroom-based support to implement a comprehensive program consistent with SLSD’s adopted curriculum. This will include modeling of best teaching practices.
- Understanding of phonics instruction, evidence based reading strategies, and the use of systematic and explicit instruction.
- Be well-versed with district adopted materials and be able to model and teach them
- Have a working knowledge of MTSS-R systems and ability to use data to support those systems and collaborate with the MTSS-R team and use data to identify priorities for professional development and coaching
- Work with the principals to create a school-wide focus on goals for literacy achievement.
- Oversee the school’s assessment procedure, training, data collection and collaborate with the principal to complete reports due.
- Participate fully in professional development opportunities and professional research and reading.
Qualifications:
- 5 years elementary classroom experience
- Deep knowledge of reading, writing and literacy development
- Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills
- Interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration) to share research based instructional approaches with teachers and administrators and provide advice, mentoring and coaching
- Strong organizational skills
- Reading Specialist endorsement preferred but not required
- Willingness to accept related instructional/coaching responsibilities
