What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Athletic Trainer position at Loomis Institute?
The Loomis Chaffee School seeks a full time certified, energetic, and knowledgeable Athletic Trainer to head our athletic training staff August 2023. As part of the Athletic Department and health care team, the certified athletic trainer provides leadership, vision and oversight for the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries as well as the general wellbeing of the student body at Loomis Chaffee.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administers and oversees the care, prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to all student-athletes.
- Provides specific clinical care as assigned by the Medical Director and student athletes physicians. Manages and supervises Athletic Training Staff and Physical Therapist
- Hires per diem Athletic Training staff as needed
- Contracts physician for all home varsity football games
- Organizes and maintains all medical records in accordance with federal and state regulations.
- Develops and maintains emergency action plans for all permanent and temporary practice and competition venues in accordance with Loomis Chaffee risk management guidelines and state regulations.
- Develops and maintains all department guidelines, policy and procedure in accordance with national and Loomis Chaffee best practices.
- Maintains all service contracts with medical consultants.
- Maintains good communication with the Director of Athletics, Director of the Health Center, school physicians and Coaching staff..
- Develops and manages the Athletic Training Facility, budgets and policies to maintain optimal health, safety and welfare of all constituents.
- Coordinates the purchasing and use of all equipment and supplies needed for the operation of the athletic training facility, in accordance with State and school policies.
- Communicate with physicians and coaching staff regarding the injury status of athletes.
- Makes appropriate physician’s referrals to Health Center.
- Assists the institution in hosting athletic events.
- Assists the Athletic Director and coaching staff in determining whether the athletic facility is in optimal and safe condition.
- Helps monitor weather conditions and dangerous environments (humidity/lightning).
- Adheres to NEPSAC/SMAC guidelines, including visiting team accommodations and services.
- Ensures the Athletic Department staff, coaches and boarding faculty maintains First-Aid, CPR and AED certification.
- Oversees campus First Aid, CPR and AED certification program.
- Coordinator of ImPact Testing program
- Works with the Health Center and Sports Neurologist overseeing Concussion protocols for all students at the school
- Responsible for implementation and practice of health and safety best practices.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations set forth by the NFHS, NCAA and NEPSAC should be maintained, reviewed and practiced to ensure compliance relative to those applicable duties.

Experience:
- Ideally, at least 5 years of experience in college or independent school Athletic Training position
- Proficiency with all Microsoft applications, including Excel and merge applications, as well as Athletic Training software.
Skills & Knowledge:
- Applied Knowledge: Athletic trainers must have knowledge about a large range of medical problems. Assessment and evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals will be needed.
- Decision-Making Skills: Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
- Attention to Detail: should be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situation when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff and families.
- Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree; preferred Master’s degree
- BOC certified and possess state Athletic Training licensure or registration.
- CPR/AED/First Aid instructor certified
Physical Requirements
Work is medium demand. Lifting upward of 100 lbs with frequent lifting and carrying objects. Medium strength is required to position student athletes for examination. May assist athletes as needed. Must be able to work in all weather conditions. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
