Summary
The Accountant is responsible for assisting the Director of Finance with the day-to-day, monthly, and year-end accounting operations for the company. The Accountant responsibilities include financial reporting, maintaining the general ledger, accounts payable, account reconciliations and analysis, maintaining budget reports, month-end closing, accounts receivable, and other related duties as necessary. In addition, the Accountant manages all fixed assets and performs routine recurring data entry and other routine administrative functions.
Responsibilities
- Provides exceptional customer service
- Manages the general ledger system and performs financial analysis, to identify and correct any issues, as they arise.
- Performs monthly account reconciliations for major balance sheet accounts, as well as bank reconciliations.
- Prepares financial statements.
- Prepares financial reports for donors, fundholders, supporting organizations, etc.
- Performs the processing of all accounts payable and grant expense transactions ensuring that all expenses are paid, documented, and electronically filed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Responds to auditor confirmation requests from fundholders’ audit firms.
- Prepares general ledger/journal entries, including, but not limited to payroll, insurance, credit card, externally managed investments, and annuities.
- Performs monthly joint investment allocation.
- Prepares various documents and schedules for Finance Committee and Board of Trustees meetings.
- Presents financial information to the Finance Committee, in coordination with the Director of Finance.
- Prepares documents, files and reports for year-end audit, and works with auditors and Director of Finance to help ensure a timely completion of all audit work.
- Anticipates questions related to accounting/finance and proactively communicates; responds promptly and thoroughly to internal and external inquiries.
- Researches, recommends, and implements process improvements within his/her area of responsibility.
- Serves as lead staff person for the Initiative Budgets.
- Maintains outside investment records for Charitable Remainder Unitrusts, Life Insurance policies, Annuities, etc.
- Maintains fixed assets, insurance policies, and real estate files and history (including documentation of all tax records).
- Maintains vendor records, updating addresses, requesting W-9’s, etc.
- Provides back up assistance to the Accounting and Finance Associate and Director of Finance in his/her absence.
- Prepares special annual financial reports under the leadership of the Director of Finance.
- Prepares overhead coverage chart and updates information.
- Prepares quarterly donor statements for Supporting Organizations.
- Serves as lead on the annual operating budget.
- Prepares all initiative’s annual budgets and distributes for approval.
- Assists Director of Finance in monitoring cash flow requirements.
- Responds to other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting or Finance, preferred.
- Prefer 5-7 years of experience in a similar role.
- Proven related course work or experience in accounting is desired.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Advanced Excel skills (PivotTables, Vlookup, etc.) are required. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Business Central and CRM is a plus.
- Proactive, highly organized self-starter with ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
- Strong time management and communication skills.
- Some non-profit experience a plus
- Social and interpersonal skills to create a pleasant environment for the guests and visitors.
- Commitment to community service and the environment.
- Regular and sustained attendance is required.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
