Job Description Summary

The Los Angeles Times is looking for a developer excited to work with the Data and Graphics Department on the 2024 election.

Job Description

This team of reporters and computer programmers has worked on projects that have attracted millions of readers, sparked government reforms and helped win some of our industry’s highest awards.

Examples of its approach can be seen in coverage of the recent primary, California’s extreme drought, neighborhood voting patterns, destructive fires, civic engagement in Los Angeles County and numerous other topics.

Requirements

  • A minimum of three years of journalism experience
  • Experience working on election results for newsrooms, or equivalent
  • Ability to foster excellent communication with peers, supervisors and the newsroom
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong news judgment, fluency in style and deep knowledge of taste and legal considerations
  • Ability to navigate digital platforms and stay on top of current events
  • Understanding of the importance of accuracy and precision
  • An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace that promotes collaboration

Strong candidates will be able to demonstrate some of the following qualifications:

  • Experience building the back-end of data-driven news applications and interactive work for the general public
  • Well versed in the tools and programming languages required for an election rig such as Node.js, APIs, Python and AWS. As well as HTML, CSS and Javascript, including libraries such as Svelte.js
  • Experience working with election results data, such as the Associated Press API
  • Familiar with the fundamentals of front-end computer programming, data visualization, news design and digital storytelling
  • Confident working in a small team of their peers on hard deadlines

This full-time, temporary position is expected to run through December. Occasional night and weekend work is required.

The pay scale the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting is $34.65 - $49.82 and takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs. Compensation will be determined based on the above factors along with the requirements of the position. At The L.A.
