Under the general direction of the Vice President of Instruction and the Associate Vice President of Instruction, the Dean of Science and Engineering performs duties in the administration and supervision of the instructional area including all programming, facilities use, instructor assignments, staff development, class schedules, staff evaluation, curriculum development and evaluation, budget recommendation, and administration of day, extended day, weekend and summer offerings.

The Dean of Science and Engineering facilitates and promotes student learning within each of the departments and programs through sound administrative practices and the creation of an equitable and inclusive environment that promotes academic rigor, fosters instructional innovation, and provides comprehensive support services to students.

Assignment Responsibilities
Typical duties may include, but are not limited to:

LEADERSHIP / COORDINATION
  • Coordinating the use of instructional facilities and evaluating off-campus facilities in support of the Area programs.
  • Providing leadership and direction in the coordination of scheduling, lab oversight, and ordering equipment each semester.
  • Supporting faculty and staff in seeking external funding to strengthen Area programs.
  • Providing leadership for the continuous development of specialized Area programming such as the Science Success Center.
  • Fostering a culture of completion which encourages degrees, certificates, job preparation and transfer.

COLLABORATION / TEAM BUILDING
  • Coordinating with science division laboratory supervisor and safety officer to ensure that hazmat, state, and federal safety and compliance requirements are maintained.
  • Facilitating articulation of Area programs with other institutions.
  • Serving as a liaison between Area departments and multiple internal and external agencies.
  • Facilitating communication between the Area and the college at large and coordinate Area programming and services across the college such as Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS), Counseling, Learning Communities, MESA, etc. to address the needs of students.
  • Working cooperatively with the administrative team in support of college goals and serve on teams, committees and work groups as appropriate.

PROJECT DOCUMENTATION / DELIVERABLES
  • Providing facilitation and guidance in the establishment and evaluation/assessment of student learning outcomes to determine the effectiveness of student learning in this area.
  • Auditing Area programs to ensure compliance with the requirements of both the State Chancellor’s Office and accreditation requirements concerning curriculum, faculty, and students.
  • Evaluating and assessing the use of instructional technologies.
  • Preparing proposals, requests and reports relating to schedules, staffing, budgets, and textbooks.
  • Developing and administering the Area budget and external grants.
  • Working with department chairs to develop class schedules, unit plans, and program plans.

TRAINING / STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND SUPERVISION
  • Providing support to faculty to promote student success of Area curriculum and programs.
  • Overseeing staff and faculty recruitment, selection, evaluation and development.
  • Enforcing guidelines pertaining to student recruitment and retention.
  • Coordinating and directing the supervision and evaluation of all classified staff in the Science and Engineering program as well as all evening classes and staff.

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

The administrative assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and/or off-campus work and/or hours.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Have a master’s degree* from an accredited institution completed by January 1, 2022.

2. Have one year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s administrative assignment

3. Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
