What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fleet Mechanic Helper position at Lower Merion Township?
This is responsible journeyman level maintenance and repair work to vehicles and equipment.
Work involves responsibility for safe and effective maintenance and routine repair of vehicles, light trucks, roads and grounds equipment and police vehicles. Duties include repairing brakes, exhausts and related components, tuning engines, changing and repairing tires, changing oil, lubricating and related preventive maintenance. This position also has the responsibility for making standard vehicle and equipment maintenance decisions in accordance with established procedures. This work requires that the employee have good knowledge, skill and ability in vehicle and equipment maintenance and routine repair.
Works under the general supervision of Fleet Supervisor, Fleet Mechanic I or II and Fleet Mechanic Crew Leader.
All job functions outlined below will be performed alongside Fleet Mechanic I and II or Fleet Crew Leader.
Performs diagnoses/identifies vehicle and equipment malfunctions and determines corrective actions to be taken through tests and inspections. Tests vehicles and equipment after repairs. Verifies completion of repairs to ensure quality service deliverable.
Repairs brakes, exhausts and related components, as assigned. Tunes engines. Performs routine repairs to automobiles and trucks, as assigned. Assists Mechanic 1 and 2 and/or Fleet Mechanic Crew Leader in more difficult repairs or repairs to heavy equipment.
Repairs or overhauls engines, transmissions, gear trains, differentials, steering/brake/clutch/ electrical systems, power takeoffs, hydraulic and pneumatic lifts and controls and related components. Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance.
Brazes or welds sheet metal and various equipment components, such as hoppers and plows.
Performs state inspections, emissions inspections and routine and preventive maintenance, if current certifications are in order.
Performs preventative maintenance, in-service inspections and field operational evaluations, as necessary.
May change and repair tires, as necessary.
Performs work in a safe manner and observes all safety procedures.
Uses all tools, equipment and materials responsibly and performs basic inspection and preventative maintenance prior to use.
Completes job or shift report form, as assigned.
Performs electronic data entry of vehicle and equipment repair information through a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
Performs related work as required.
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent or be age 15 and currently enrolled in a Vocational/Technical School that is eligible to participate in a Co-Op program that provides both liability and Workers Compensation coverage for Co-Op students. Proof of enrollment and insurance coverage will be required.
Valid Class C Driver’s License.
Knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods of vehicle and equipment overhaul and repair.
Knowledge of the work standards and safety procedures in vehicle and equipment overhaul and repair.
Skill in the use of mechanic’s tools.
Ability to perform vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair safely, effectively and efficiently.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to learn Township procedures. Good ability to communicate orally.
Good ability to complete forms and charts.
Ability to stand for a minimum of 1 up to 8 hours, walk for a minimum of 1 up to 8 hours and drive for a minimum of 1 up to 8 hours per workday.
Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, lift and push/pull for up to 68% of the workday.
Ability to climb, crawl and reach above shoulder level for up to 35% of the workday.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of tools, equipment and materials for up to 68% of the workday and lift and carry up to 100 pounds of tools, materials and equipment for up to 35% of the workday.
Ability to use both feet for operating foot controls of equipment.
Ability to use both hands for simple grasping, firm grasping and fine manipulation of tools, equipment and objects.
Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions around moving machinery.
Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions where environmental conditions may be challenging.
Ability to drive an automobile.
