Duties and Responsibilities

Loyola University Chicago, College of Arts and Sciences, Honors Program seeks qualified candidates for a Temporary, one-year Instructor Appointment (non-renewable) for academic year 2024-2025.

The Honors Program supports experiential, engaged, problem or project-based, and design-focused learning opportunities on campus.

We are looking for candidates with a passion for inspiring and engaging students with these innovative pedagogical approaches.

Located on Chicago's vibrantly multicultural North Side, LUC is committed to creating an inclusive, responsive community of faculty, students, and staff.

As an urban-based program dedicated to mentoring a diverse student body, many of whom come from underrepresented and underserved populations, we especially encourage applications from candidates from underrepresented groups.

This search is part of a University-wide, multiyear hiring initiative designed to hire outstanding researchers and teachers who are reflective of our diverse student body and committed to interdisciplinarity (i.

e., collaborating with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines). Of special interest are candidates who can further the University's efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Teaching responsibilities include four courses in each semester of the academic year. We are particularly interested in candidates who can teach our first-year courses, which range chronologically from antiquity to today, and offer an updated "Great Books" curriculum.

The instructor will teach an entire cohort of approximately 320 first-year students in a team-taught course and lead multiple small discussion sections of twenty-five students or less.

As part of this teaching assignment, the incumbent will be required to attend several cultural events outside of class time throughout the academic year, such as attending the opera and visiting the Art Institute of Chicago.

The candidate will have a Ph.D. in a field in the Humanities or Arts and must clearly demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and have a record of (or clear potential for) student mentorship.

The candidate should be willing to support the mission of Loyola University Chicago and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.

Loyola University Chicago is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action employer with a strong commitment to hiring for our mission and diversifying our faculty.

The University seeks to increase the diversity of its professoriate, workforce, and undergraduate and graduate student populations because broad diversity - including a wide range of individuals who contribute to a robust academic environment - is critical to achieving the University's mission of excellence in education, research, educational access, and services in an increasingly diverse society.

Therefore, in holistically accessing the many qualifications of each applicant, we would factor favorably an individual's record of conduct that includes experience with an array of diverse perspectives, as well as a wide variety of different educational, research, or other work activities.

Among other qualifications, we would also factor favorably experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic career or degree.

To learn more about LUC's mission, candidates should consult our website at www.luc.edu / mission / . For information about the university's focus on transformative education, they should consult our website at www.
