The Sustainability & Energy Management Specialist plays an essential role as the technical lead for energy, water and waste management in our manufacturing, digital fulfillment and distribution facilities. As the Sustainability & Energy Management Specialist, you uphold our Lush culture and values through fearless leadership and owning the projects and initiatives that reduce the environmental impact of our buildings and operations, while returning a positive ROI. You will work closely with the capex, facilities and continuous improvement teams as well as the production managers to analyze processes and identify, prioritize, plan and execute projects and initiatives.

Reporting to the Sustainability Manager, the Sustainability and Energy Management Specialist undertakes the following RESPONSIBILITIES:
Green Building Systems & Sustainable Operations
- Identify, prioritize, plan and execute projects and initiatives that drive continuous improvement in operational performance and building systems improvements, especially in the areas of energy efficiency, water conservation and waste reduction
- Develop project proposals with compelling business cases and support annual budgeting and multi-year capital planning
- Champion Lush’s 2030 targets for facility electrification and fossil fuel free operations, as well as achieve our forthcoming Science Based Targets
- Cultivate robust working relationships through effective stakeholder engagement with construction/capex, facilities/maintenance, factory management and production teams
- Further develop and expand energy audits, energy management planning for our Toronto manufacturing and distribution facilities, targeting energy efficiency, electrification, and renewable energy opportunities
- Evaluate water efficiency, reduction and recycling opportunities through process and technology initiatives
- Identify waste reduction opportunities and work collaboratively toward zero waste facilities
- Develop a strong understanding of our production processes to drive system improvements and process innovation throughout
- Support Sustainability Team collaboration with the freight team on sustainable transportation criteria and decision making to reduce emissions from freight and distribution
- Serve as project manager for building improvement projects, while managing and maintaining a productive relationship with contractors. Oversee purchase orders, billing and government incentives.
Environmental Metrics, Analysis & Education
- Create resources and support training to increase education and engagement around sustainable building performance, continuous improvement, and behavior changes, including leading a Lush Green Team
- Conduct environmental and financial analyses to evaluate and prioritize areas for improvement, build the business case and demonstrate measurable results
- Compile and analyze data on energy, water, and waste
- Collaborate and support special projects and strategy development on renewable energy and water replenishment
You bring the following QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- 5 years of work experience in energy and environmental management in manufacturing or commercial buildings with experience in successful implementation of sustainability projects
- Bachelor’s degree in related field: mechanical, industrial, environmental, process, chemical engineering, sustainable business
- Hands-on technical knowledge in building systems and equipment including HVAC, boiler, and refrigeration
- Experience in industrial energy management including portfolio benchmarking and analysis
- Outstanding project management skills - strong organization, time management and ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Experience in continuous improvement, capital project planning and budgeting
- Clearly communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
- Proven ability to lead successful change management initiatives
- Strong analytical skills – you love spreadsheets and can translate data into the story it tells
- Proactive and solution-oriented with the ability to be fluid, flexible and adaptable
- The desire and ability to work as a team player and support team priorities and initiatives as they arise
- Enjoys working with and engaging people across all levels of the organization from front-line production and maintenance staff to senior management
- Understanding of Ontario’s environmental regulations, building codes, ASHRAE and other applicable codes and standards
- An open mindset, curiosity, and desire to learn
Preferred:
- 8 years of growth experience in energy and environmental management in manufacturing or commercial buildings, with experience in successful implementation of sustainability projects
- Graduate degree in a related field or equivalent training
- Sustainability certifications or credentials such as Certified Environmental Professional, Certified Energy Manager, P.Eng, EIT, LEED AP or Green Associate, TRUE Zero Waste Advisor, etc.
- Practical knowledge and experience in water and/or wastewater management
- Experience in lean manufacturing
