The Role
The MA Film Office (MFO) has been designated as the lead agency to facilitate motion picture production and development within the Commonwealth. The position of Director will manage strategic initiatives, communication and collaborations with MFO industry partners including the MA Office of Travel and Tourism. The MFO Director will review and reconcile all reports and expenditures to ensure all MFO funds are disbursed properly and within the agency’s scope and guidelines, and in accordance with M.G.L. and the Massachusetts Fiscal Year State Budget
Job Duties
- Coordinate and facilitate all aspects of the Massachusetts film, television, and digital media industry (commercial, non-profit, independent, and documentary) including workforce development and infrastructure improvement
- Provide ongoing assessment and analysis of the competition for MA film, television, and digital production
- Develop strategies to maintain Massachusetts' competitive position
- Respond rapidly to production companies' questions and issues
- Maintain centralized records, databases, and systems to keep MFO location information current and accurate.
- Facilitate cooperation with Massachusetts unions and local production service companies-especially as it relates to smaller budget projects and television commercials
- Collaborate with MA Department of Revenue on tracking and data programs that measure the effectiveness of the film tax credit
- Facilitate the development of all sectors of the local Massachusetts film, television, and digital media industry (commercial, non-profit, independent, and documentary) including workforce development and infrastructure improvement.
- Develop current, accurate, and reliable industry-related data and information related to the film industry
- Prepare research-related reports and presentations
- Develop and implement communications programs for industry partners and the general public
- Manage web content development
- Manage the annual MFO strategic and operational plan and set program priorities
- Manage interactions with government agencies and industry constituencies
- Manage editorial decisions relative to film-related web design and online content as well as other MFO initiatives
- Provide oversight for MFO assistant director and other MFO staff
- Provide ongoing assessment of market conditions and opportunities
- Manage the online Production Guide
- Manage responses to initial questions about locations
- Manage routine updates and additions to mafilm.org
- Other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of film industry processes and key stakeholders
Excellent project management skills with experience in managing and supervising administrative projects
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
Excellent organizational skills
Proficient in Microsoft Excel/spreadsheets
Experience with basic financial management skills including developing and monitoring budgets and financial reporting
Ability to interpret complex legislative funding requirements, submissions, and contracts
Ability to interpret federal, state, and local government laws and regulations regarding administration
Ability to review the work of others to ensure conformance to standards
Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and produce quality results on time with attention to detail
Ability to communicate effectively across a broad spectrum of staff, both orally and in writing
Team player; supportive to peers and senior staff, and ability to collaborate when possible
Qualifications
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) six (6) years of full-time or, equivalent part-time, professional, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in business administration, business management, public administration, public management, clinical administration or clinical management of which (B) at least two (2) years must have been in a project management, supervisory or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A certificate in a relevant or related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required (A) experience.
II. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience.
III. A Graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required (A) experience.
IV. A Doctorate degree in a related field may be substituted for four (4) years of the required (A) experience.
