Overview
This individual would join a large team of professionals who work within our client's world-class 50,000 square-foot Machining/Manufacturing facility. This facility includes over 90 state of the art CNC machines and technologies. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated tool/cutter grinder to work in our exciting, fast paced work environment utilizing their knowledge of metalworking and cutter grinding to produce specialized tooling used in the manufacture of machined components for our biotechnology products.
The position requires set-up and operation abilities of manual grinding equipment such as surface grinders, various indexing attachments, drill sharpeners, low-speed angle grinders, etc. Routine inspection of own work , applicable computer skills, ability to read and interpret technical drawings and make sound troubleshooting decisions is required. This role is part of the overall strategy and decision-making process for providing the best tooling solutions possible whether procured or developed in-house. Excellent communication skills are paramount as interaction with associates from various departments is a required function.

What you get to do
- Fabricates, modifies, and repairs tools consisting of drills, end mills, inserts, reamers, taps, etc. used in the manufacture of instrument level machined parts. These tools are typically on the small/micro spectrum of tooling.
- Sets up and operates grinding machines, such as a surface grinder (with attachments), low rpm adjustable table grinder, drill grinder and tool and cutter-grinder, to sharpen cutting tools working to close tolerances obtaining necessary information from blueprints, specification sheets, or verbal instructions, along with using knowledge of abrasives and metal properties. Typical materials are HSS, HSCO, Carbide (various grades).
- Selects grinding wheel of shape and grade and dresses wheel to produce desired cutting action.
- Measures sharpened cutting tools to verify conformance to specifications using fixed gauges, micrometers, calipers, optical measuring devices, and surface gauges.
- Occasionally requires development/iterations of cutting tools in order to find the optimal grind geometries, materials, and coatings.
- Coordinate activities with shop personnel to resolve tooling problems and needs.
- Design, modify or make special tools according to specifications or tooling requirements as needed.
- Develop specialized methods/processes for tool grinding/development to achieve repeatable consistency as necessary.
- Shared responsibility for maintenance of tool inventories within the tool crib and notifies supervisor when tools should be ordered or sent outside for sharpening based on usage, work load and availability of tool.
- High School Diploma (Trade/Vocational School/Apprenticeship certificate in machine technology or related field preferred).
- 3 years related metalworking tool grinding experience.
- Ability to read and understand shop blueprints, invoices, and standard order sheets.
- Personal computer skills required.
- A working knowledge of inventory management and scheduling would be beneficial but is not essential for consideration.
