HIRING AUTHORITY: Director
 
F.L.S.A. STATUS: Non-exempt

EMPLOYMENT RELATIONSHIP: Just cause subject to probationary period

CURRENT HOURS AND STARTING TIME: Full-time position (40 hours per week). The starting time of this position is currently 7:30 a.m.

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under direction, installs, modifies and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatuses and control equipment; modifies electrical installations to minimize waste of materials and provide access for future maintenance; makes routine inspections of installed equipment and/or systems to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation or replacement; performs emergency service and preventative maintenance on all electrical equipment and systems; performs related duties as assigned.

Follows diagrams and/or blueprints, insuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings and flooring.

Makes standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment.

Uses a variety of tools or equipment, such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools and testing equipment to measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble and install electrical wiring based on job specifications.

Pulls wiring through conduit.

Splices wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads, twisting or soldering wires together and applying tape or terminal caps.

Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment.

Installs control and distribution apparatuses such as switches, relays and circuit-breaker panels.

Connects power cables to equipment and installs grounding leads.

Tests electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment or fixtures, using testing equipment such as oscilloscopes, ammeters or test lamps.

Maintains emergency generators, lift stations and other electrical equipment and systems.

Erects scaffolding or sets up ladders necessary for performing tasks above ground level.

Operates an automobile while performing assigned duties.


Required Education and Experience
  • Possession of a high school diploma or a certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development Test
  • Successful completion of a formal apprentice training program for the Electrical Trade
  • A minimum if five (5) years of experience as a licensed Electrician
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Service truck or service work experience
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Electrical License
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license and an operable insured automobile for authorized travel


Knowledge of:

  • Materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads
  • Machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
  • Electrical equipment and systems
Skill in:
  • Identifying measures of indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance
  • Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure system performance
  • Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications
  • Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed
Ability to:
  • Operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, measuring and testing equipment
  • Repair and maintain electrical equipment and systems
  • Effectively speak, write and understand the English language
  • Effectively speak, write and understand a language other than English is preferred
  • Understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions
  • Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information
  • Works independently
