Role Summary
The buyer will need to be familiar with the supplier base, know the strengths and weaknesses of major suppliers, determine the main cost drivers, and build action plans to maintain required quality and delivery while minimizing costs. Provides liaison services between vendors and the business for order status, procurement procedures, and problem resolution; research sources of supply; advises departments on cost effective alternatives
Key Responsibilities
- Interview and work closely with vendors to obtain and develop desired products. This may require travel both within and outside the U.S. on a frequent basis.
- Compile and distribute RFQ packages including statement of requirements.
- Create and maintain standard formats for supplier costing/quoting.
- Maintain and review records of items purchased, costs, delivery, product performance, and inventories.
- Negotiate supplier price/reductions as necessary
- Confer with staff, users, and vendors to discuss defective or unacceptable goods or services and determine corrective action.
- Evaluate and monitor contract performance to ensure compliance with contractual obligations and to determine need for changes.
- Monitor shipments to ensure that goods come in on time, and in the event of problems, trace shipments and follow up on undelivered goods.
- Analyze and monitor sales records, trends and economic conditions to anticipate consumer buying patterns and determine what the company will sell and how much inventory is needed.
- Ensure quality requirements (as they relate to the department’s responsibilities) are complied with, and assist maintaining all required quality forms and related documentation.
- Identify concerns and initiate corrective actions (through verification) relating to product, process, and quality systems.
- Initiate preventative and continuous improvement actions relating to product, process, and quality systems.
- Create and maintain standard formats for supplier costing/quoting.
Key Qualifications/Requirements
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills at all levels (verbal and written).
- Effective negotiator, with superior analytical/problem solving and decision making skills.
- Ability to travel, with little notice.
- Basic knowledge of applicable quality, health, safety, and environmental management systems.
- Good organizational skills with the ability to successfully manage multiple projects while meeting critical timing schedules.
- The qualified candidate must have five years of purchasing experience
- Bachelor’s degree in in business or other related field.
- Proficient Computer knowledge and skills, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong technical and analytical competence in select areas of technology.
