JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Ophthalmic Assistant Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary:
Demonstrates ability to multi-task by working up patients, scribing and performing diagnostic testing as needed. Gathers pertinent medical information and performs a variety of patient testing to assist doctors with diagnosis and treatment. Requires prolonged standing.
Responsibilities:
- Greets patients, introduces self and guides to appropriate exam area
- Reviews pertinent patient information on chart to assist doctor with patient care
- Performs Basic Elements of an Eye Exam:
- History Taking: Ocular, Medical, Surgical, and Family History ; Chief Complaint; Medications and Allergies
- Visual Acuity Testing (near, distance, pinhole)
- Auto refraction & Lensometry Testing (manual and automated)
- Applanation Tonometry
- Topography
- Pupil evaluation
- Instill Ocular Medications
- Evaluation of Ocular Motility and Muscle Alignment
- Confrontation Visual Field Testing and Humphrey Visual Field Testing
- Stereo and Color Vision Testing as needed
- Performs contact lens fittings as directed by doctor
- Educates patient on contact lens insertion and removal instructions
- Scribes patient chart notes for doctor as required
- Performs diagnostic testing as ordered by doctor
- Writes glasses and contact lens prescriptions as ordered by doctor
- Provides patient education in accordance with established protocol
- Codes router with diagnosis and exam/procedure codes
- Monitors patient flow by directing doctor to the next patient
- Fills out necessary medical forms as necessary, i.e. DPS forms, workers comp
- Processes pharmacy refill orders as required (E-scribe)
- Responsible for daily maintenance and stocking of exam lanes (open and close)
- Escorts and/or transports patients to check out desk/optical
- Assists with scheduling appointment with outside doctor when necessary (i.e. referral to retina specialist)
- Maintains CPR certification
- Maintains sterile technique in accordance with OSHA standards
- Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines
- Maintains positive working relationship with doctors and all staff members
- Assists doctor with in office minor procedures i.e. punctual plug insertion, epilation, chalazion excision
- Other duties as assigned
