What are the responsibilities and job description for the SAFETY MANAGER position at Maple Leaf Farms?
Location: Leesburg, IN
Reports To: The VP of HR
Position Duties:
- Develop and champion plant safety culture.
- Direct safety programs. Recommend the design and implementation of new programs to minimize company loss due to unsafe acts/incidents.
- Analyze and measure effectiveness of current programs, making changes as necessary.
- Lead compliance initiatives. Inspect machinery, equipment, and working conditions to ensure compliance with OSHA and other applicable regulations/standards. Develop correction action with management team as needed.
- Develop and coach facility safety committees.
- Analyze plant and companywide incidents and trends, using KPIs, both leading and lagging indicators, to assist in the reduction of exposures and incidents.
- Communicate safety policy and procedure change recommendations to management.
- Responsible for ensuring that all safety policies, procedures, and practices are reviewed on an annual basis, or as changes and updates are required by practice or regulation.
- Conduct safety inspections and procedural audits in the field and have the skills, knowledge, and ability to work with the management team to develop and implement corrective action as necessary.
- Ensure effective training is conducted in such areas as emergency response, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, hazard communication, slips and falls, hazard awareness/prevention, fall protection, confined space, and personal protective equipment (not exhaustive list).
- Develop and lead incident/near miss investigation procedures which include team investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action recommendation and follow up.
- Provide coaching and mentoring to the management team in a way that builds trust and respect.
- Manage, support, mentor, and coach Occupational Health and Safety Team.
- Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in safety or related discipline preferred.
- Experience: 3 years of progressive experience in general safety. Prior safety management preferred. Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, hazard identification, incident investigation, and safety training methods. Knowledge of best practice regarding PSM RMP safety practices helpful.
- Communication Skills: Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and employees, business partners, and the public.
- Special Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to coach and mentor team members.
- Superior organizational, time-management, analytical and decision-making skills to effectively evaluate, plan, and accomplish work goals.
- Ability to support multi-shift operation.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
