The GI Lab Technician in Surgical Services is a professional health care giver who serves as the "scrub" person to assist the surgeon during Endoscopic procedures. The GI Lab tech functions under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and is responsible for providing Endoscopic care based on current standards of care and standards of practice as appropriate for the ages of the patient. Effectively interacts with patients, significant others, and other health team members. Understands the needs of the organization, and supports the missions, values, and management of patient care.
Reports to: Surgical Services Director
Demonstrates proficiency when performing technical skills within scope of practice. Serves as "scrub" during GI Lab procedures.
Follows infection control standards of practice to prevent the transmission of disease/pathogens.
Assists in determining effectiveness of infection control standards for decontamination and disinfection process.
Demonstrates proficiency in aseptic technique.
Assures room is ready for case prior to patient arrival. Equipment and supply readiness, air circulation and cleanliness and disinfected.
Promotes physical comfort and safety during transfer of patients and positioning and restraining patients for surgical procedures.
Demonstrates competence in assembling and use of equipment.
Assists in transporting and lifting of patients.
Assisting the Registered nurse in the preparation of specimens and transporting them to a designated area.
Assists the physician or nurse during the GI Lab procedure. Passes instruments correctly, often anticipating the surgeons needs.
Cleans and disinfects soiled instruments.
Checks expiration dates on sterile supplies.
Minimum EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent Required
Completion of OR technician school preferred.
Required SkillsCertifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Minimum Work ExperienceExperience as an OR technician helpful.
One year OR experience preferred.

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
