Overview

The Marin Environmental Housing Collaborative (MEHC) is a volunteer group of affordable housing, environmental and social justice advocates. MEHC works to support environmentally friendly affordable housing by educating the Marin public and decision makers on proposed policies and projects. MEHC consists of a Board of Directors, led by its four-member Executive Committee. MEHC encourages support for and collaboration with with its efforts from members of the Marin community.

MEHC is seeking a part-time Housing Specialist to assist in our on-going activities. This position is no more than 10 hours per week at $20 - $25 per hour, depending on experience. The position requires attendance at scheduled virtual monthly Board Meetings, Executive Committee Meetings and Communications Committee meetings. However, the remaining duties may be flexibly scheduled. This is a remote workplace position, although we prefer someone who lives in or near Marin.

The Specialist will report to the Board Chair, with direction by the Executive Committee. The Specialist will be tasked with the following:

Board Support (30%)

  • Assist in scheduling meetings and events as needed.
  • Assist in preparation of board meetings (collecting updates, assisting in agenda preparation and distribution).
  • Attend bi-weekly Communications Committee meetings and monthly board and executive committee meetings; other meetings and events as needed.
  • Take, edit, and distribute notes for board meetings and retreat.
  • Schedule other appointments for Board members as needed.
  • Manage MEHC calendar and email account.

2. Public education (35%)

  • Draft weekly “This week in housing” emails, including researching local housing meetings and articles.
  • Produce bi-monthly Perspectives newsletters, addressing specific housing issues to be edited and finalized by the Communications Committee and Marketing Communications Consultant. Work with board members to develop content for newsletters.
  • Draft and distribute an annual report in coordination with and to be finalized by MEHC’s Communications Committee and Marketing Communications Consultant. The Marketing Communications Consultant will be responsible for finalizing the annual report.
  • Maintain the MEHC website in coordination with the Marketing Communications Consultant and website developer.
  • Update and maintain social media accounts (currently FaceBook page) in coordination with Marketing Communications Consultant.
  • Outreach to members and potential members (TBD).

3. Research and advocacy (30%)

  • Review articles and op-ed page materials from local newspapers relative to MEHC’s mission.
  • Track housing, development and environmental proposals in Marin County. Inform the Board of emerging issues.
  • Propose research items.
  • Work with board members to draft position papers, Marin Voice IJ articles, letters of support, and letters to the Marin IJ editor.
  • Propose advocacy positions on pending projects and policy proposals, including but not limited to source of income protection ordinances, sea level rise and Marin housing development projects.

4. Fund raising (5%)

  • Assist Board with grant applications.
  • Assist in the organization and production of our annual fundraiser.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and strong interest in housing issues, especially affordable housing and housing’s impact on the environment and racial equity.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • We have a preference for a candidate with knowledge of email marketing platforms, and website platforms.
  • We have a strong preference for someone who lives in Marin or has strong local knowledge.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
