The Market Underwriter 1 works under the close supervision of the Region Leader and with a clearly defined set of guidelines to make sound underwriting decisions and generate profitable growth for assigned agencies. Serves as the primary Personal Lines contact for assigned agencies.  Pursues leads for new business pipeline under the guidance of the Region Leader. Reviews and approves new business and endorsements within assigned authority level. Analyzes books of business for assigned agencies.

Essential Functions (primary functions and/or reasons the job exists in order of importance)

1. Under close supervision of the Region Leader and with a clearly defined set of guidelines, responsible for generating profitable growth and making sound underwriting decisions for assigned agencies.
2. Serves as the primary Personal Lines contact for assigned agencies, Agency Coordinator for assigned Trilogy and Horizon agencies, and Personal Lines representative on cross-functional teams
3. Works with other underwriters, Senior/Master Underwriters, and Region Leader to develop skills such as: Underwriting acumen, sales techniques, interpersonal skills, analytical acumen, industry knowledge and overall understanding of Westfield business operations.
4. Works with the Region Leader to pursue leads for new business pipeline.
5. Based on authority level, reviews and approves new business and endorsement transactions submitted from assigned agents and refers to the appropriate authority level if needed; evaluates large losses and refers to the Region Leader for approval;  performs loss referral and future status evaluations and documents for appropriate action; and sets up and issues non-renewals, cancellations, and direct notices.
6. Under supervision of the Region Leader, and in collaboration with other business units, identifies and completes required analysis to develop, deliver, and monitor agency business plans for Trilogy, Horizon, and key agencies.  Monitors all implemented plans within assigned territory monthly and provides a quarterly report to the Region Leader.
7. Performs loss referral evaluations, implements post-loss underwriting actions, evaluates large losses, and assesses claims risk analysis, MVRs, and other similar transactions.

Desired Qualifications/Experience/Certification/Education (in order of importance)

1. 3 years of P&C insurance experience -OR- successful completion of the Westfield Graduate Development Program. 
2. Demonstrated strong customer service skills.
3. Proven ability to analyze problems and develop business solutions.
4. Demonstrated strong organizational skills including the ability to prioritize work.
5. Demonstrated sound, versatile, and timely decision making skills.
6. Demonstrated strong verbal, written, interpersonal, presentation and organizational skills.
7. Working towards or possess a CPCU, AU, CIC, API, and/or AINS designation.

Physical Requirements (specific to the role) 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

• Ability to work effectively in an office environment for 40 hours per week (including sitting, standing, and working on a computer for extended periods of time).
• Ability to communicate effectively in a collaborative work environment utilizing various technologies such as:  telephone, computer, web, voice, teleconferencing, e-mail, etc.
• Ability to operate an automobile within the parameters of the driving policy.
• Ability to travel as required.
