Purpose of Role:
The Stationary Steam Engineering Technician is responsible for the efficient, safe, and reliable operation and condition of the utilities systems and equipment. The Stationary Steam Engineering technician must be multi-crafted (mechanical/electrical). Their work includes preventive and predictive maintenance, planned work orders, scheduling and resource management, continuous improvement, project activities and training. They must systematically repair, adjust and maintain boilers, compressors, pumps and related equipment as assigned using established maintenance reliability practices, consistent observation, repair, and follow-up of operational effectiveness.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Maintain, troubleshoot, test, modify, and program automated, electromechanical equipment to include:
- Ammonia Refrigeration production and distribution systems
- Steam plant system using natural gas
- Compressed air system
- Incoming electrical distribution system
- Water softening system
- Incoming natural gas and city water
- Plumbing, pipefitting, and repair in all utilities systems
- Utilities associated pumps and valves
- Water testing and chemical treatment of steam lines, boilers and condenser
- Preparation , including teardown and repair for annual boiler inspections
- Apply engineering principals with mechanical and electrical knowledge to eliminate operational problems and improve efficiency and reliability
- Develop, track, and communicate maintenance specifics metrics to identify reduce and eliminate recurring issues on equipment and improve system reliability
- Apply predictive maintenance technologies and condition based monitoring to equipment (oil analysis, vibration analysis, motor circuit analysis)
- Perform Root Cause Failure Analysis on major unplanned breakdowns and recurring problems
- Develop and implement Preventive Maintenance Procedures for each equipment item
- Maintain equipment and assembly drawings and schematics, document maintenance activities, and maintain historic records
- Design, implementation and completion of reliability and cost reduction projects on equipment
- Provide design input and maintenance support to engineering on major project concept, implementation, commission, validation and start-up
- Schedule and manage activities of contractors for modifications, additions, heavy construction and highly specialized labor performed on assigned equipment or systems
- Be the systems expert and a resource of knowledge in operation, controls, set-up, complex maintenance procedures and calibration of instruments to ISO standards
- Procure and maintain replacement parts inventory for the assigned equipment
- Rebuild and restock spare parts assemblies for equipment or systems
- Manage personal work schedule and planned work orders to maintain system reliability and optimize run time
- Operate and monitor ADT fire system, working with ADT personnel
Mission Critical Competencies:
- Install, maintain and repair electrical systems including single and 3-phase controls and distribution systems 600 Volts AC and less
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot AC and DC variable speed controls in the utilities systems
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot electronic field devices, instruments relating to pressure, temperature, flow, and operation of associated electronic equipment
- Programmable Logic Controller troubleshooting, repair, software programming, modification, and adjustments
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and modify mechanical systems, hydraulic and pneumatic controlled and powered systems and components.
- Interpret Blueprints
- Management of area assets, equipment maintenance schedules, improvement projects, downtime personnel and resources, and equipment historical data
Key Functional Skills/Knowledge:
- Electrical/Electronics-install and repair (some explosion proof environments)
- Single and 3-phase powered equipment (troubleshoot, test, and repair)
- AC and DC control systems (troubleshoot, test, and repair)
- AC variable speed and servo drives (troubleshoot, replace, program)
- Precision instrumentation installation, repair and calibration (flow meters, pressure transducers, temperature controls, digital/analog devices)
- Programmable Logic Controller installation, troubleshooting, repair and adjustment
- Operate electronic test equipment (multi-meter, meg-ohm meter, amp probe, Hart Communicator)
- Hydraulic and pneumatic control and powered systems
- Steel fabrication and repair
- Welding (MIG, TIG and stick)
- Thermal processing instruments and controls
- Proper use of hand and power tools
Desired Education:
- HS Diploma or equivalent
- Associates degree or equivalent in mechanical or electro-mechanical engineering
- Technical training from an accredited school and / or military experience in related fields

Minimum Qualification:
- 5+ years experience maintaining electrical control and mechanical systems in high-pressure steam plant
- Demonstrated experience working with ammonia refrigeration
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting, testing, and repairing air compressors
- 480 Volt, Three Phase power distribution and motor controls
- Machining – Working knowledge in the operation of shop equipment including – End Mill, Lathe, Drill press, etc.
- Mechanical maintenance
- Must posses Ohio State High Pressure Boiler Operator’s License and be able to attain Ohio State Stationary Steam engineer License (Third Class or higher) within one year
- Most recent Performance appraisal with a minimum of a “Meets Expectations” and not more than 1 year old
- No active caution notices
- Acceptable attendance (less than 7 incidents and no discipline above an Initial Warning)
- Physical requirements: Ability to perform all needed physical activities without restrictions (Maximum of 50 pounds lifting)
