What are the responsibilities and job description for the Superintendent position at Martin Concrete?
Direct and manage all field operations with overall responsibilities for safety, production, quality, and other production-related activities. The Superintendent will ensure that all aspects of the project’s construction are effectively coordinated, meet specifications, and remain on schedule. In addition to the noted responsibilities the superintendent must perform the following:
- Understand and communicate to all field personnel the owner’s goals regarding construction.
- Maintain a positive outlook while communicating with the customer. Communicate needs of customer with Project Manager
- Participate in kick off meetings with Project Manager, Field Operations Manager, Safety Operations Managers, and/or Directors of Field Services and any other applicable parties.
- Develop the safety culture for your team and jobsite. Create an open atmosphere that individuals feel comfortable bringing issues and ideas to the table.
- Set and uphold the safety expectations for any subcontractors on your site.
- Attend pre-construction meeting with the General Contractor to help understand project needs and help manage the customers’ expectations for Martin Concrete.
- Create a two week look ahead for Field Operations Manager and Project Manager.
- Order all material and tools needed.
- Communicate with other superintendents to understand how your project can help or impact their project
- Create a structure for your team to allow you to oversee quality and schedule of the entire project
- Meeting with client representatives on a regular basis to discuss the status of projects, to proactively identify and resolve problems, and to assure that the client is kept knowledgeable about the status of the work
- Coordination of sub-contractors, including follow up on site attendance issues, review of sub-contracted work for quality and completeness, and conflict resolution with sub-contractors
- Supervise all field personnel to achieve completion of the project on schedule to conform to original plans and specifications.
- Develop and control plans for profit and operating budget with Project Manager.
- Implement cost effective systems of control over operating expenditures, manpower, wages and salaries.
- Establish and monitor overall performance for production and quality standards.
- Control and minimize overtime expenses.
- Coordinate maintenance of equipment; replace, swap, or adjust when necessary.
- Provide leadership and training to employees to accomplish the company goals and objectives.
- Support required HR activities; salary, position changes, interviews, hire, suspend, layoff, terminate, and manage, field crew with the support of the Director of Field Operations.
- Provide staff training and development to ensure we establish a highly skilled work force.
- Responsible for field documentation such as daily reports, reviewing extra work orders, recording time, conducting daily safety inspections and other required reports.
- Assist Project Manager in establishing working relationship and positive interaction with owners, architects, engineers and subcontractors.
- Assist the Project Manager in updating the project schedule to ensure project milestones are achieved; Implement corrective action where necessary to catch up and meet key milestone dates.
- Assist Project Manager in identifying changes in project scope and pricing changes.
This position reports directly to the Field Operations Manager with dotted line responsibility to the Director of Field Services.
Minimum Requirements
- 5 years’ experience as a Superintendent in commercial, industrial, tilt up, or multi story construction
- Notable knowledge and skills for the technical aspect of concrete construction
- Proven ability to read and understand drawings
- Ability to create and maintain positive working relationships with customers, employees, and vendors.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and nights if necessary
In addition to the above listed minimum requirements, candidates who possess the following skills, experience, and capabilities may receive greater consideration during the evaluation process:
- OSHA Certification
- TCA or ACI Certification
- Bilingual (English/ Spanish)
