We have an opportunity for a top candidate to join Maryville College’s staff as the new College Chaplain.

 

 

The College Chaplain has overall responsibility for the Center for Campus Ministry (CCM), and for fostering religious and spiritual life at Maryville College through a multifaith and pluralistic approach. Working collaboratively with a diverse community of students, administrators, faculty, and staff, the Chaplain will endeavor to integrate the College’s PCUSA church relatedness into the fabric of college life, providing a nurturing environment that equips students with resources to help them build a mature and credible faith for an increasingly complex world (MC Faith and Learning Statement, 2024). The College’s Presbyterian affiliation encourages service, stresses humility, and promotes exploration and growth in faith and understanding throughout our lives. The Chaplain will be a visible, approachable, and accessible spiritual resource for the entire campus community, working in conjunction with other campus support resources, such as the VP/Dean of Students, Student Counseling, Human Resources, etc. The Chaplain will represent the College with the Presbyterian Church USA, including the Presbytery and Synod, and will coordinate the overall work of the Board of Church Visitors (BCV).

 

 

Your primary job duties and responsibilities would include:

Student Recruitment

  • Recruits MAST (Maryville Adventures in Studying Theology) program participants for future enrollment at Maryville College
  • Works with the Director of MAST Programs to develop themes and provides input for Expanding Horizons, a weeklong summer institute program curriculum
  • Participates in selection and supervision of church-related scholars

 

Outreach and Visibility

  • Serves as College liasion between the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and Maryville College
  • Serves as primary College liaison to all PCUSA churches in partnership with Maryville College
  • Ensures College representation at appropriate (Presbytery, Synod, and/or church-wide) meetings
  • Plans and coordinates the Board of Church Visitors meeting and activities
  • Collaborates with partner churches and appropriate staff on service opportunities for church-related scholars
  • Serves as a College Liaison to NetVue

 

Pastoral Care, Worship and Spiritual Formation

  • Provides pastoral care for students, faculty, and staff, in conjunction with other College support resources
  • Provides leadership for weekly Chapel and the annual Easter Sunrise Service
  • Works to build an inclusive and welcoming community, embracing diversity at the College
  • Participates in College ceremonies and special events, as appointed

 

Administration

  • Oversees implementation of the organizational plan of the Center for Campus Ministry
  • Oversees space utilization of the Center for Campus Ministry
  • Serves as chair of the Faith and Learning Committee, to establish Faith and Learning Initiatives
  • Provides for the effective oversight of day-to-day operations of Campus Ministry, in support of Student Affairs Division policies and procedures, in collaboration with the Vice President/Dean of Students
  • Establishes and promotes the vision, mission, and strategic goals of the Center for Campus Ministry, in order to align with and advance the divisional and college-wide strategic plans
  • Collaborates with the Office of Advancement to steward and develop relationships with relevant MC alumni and partner churches
  • Collaborates with the MAST Program Director
  • Chairs the Cummings Conversation planning committee
  • Collaborates with the VP/Dean of Students and Marketing and Communications on digital and print media/fact sheets for recruitment, newsletters for campus and community stakeholders, and a CCM annual report

 

 

Minimum qualifications for this job required are:

Education required to ensure success in this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university required.
  • A master’s degree in divinity from an accredited institution is required.
  • Strongly preferred: Current ordination in the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA).
  • Required: Current ordination in either the PCUSA OR current ordination in a denomination with which the PCUSA is in full communion.

 

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

  • Familiarity with ministry and theology of the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) required.
  • Experience with supporting the religious and spiritual life of college/university communities and promoting interfaith and pluralistic cooperation on campus.
  • Experience managing budgets and creating and generating reports.
  • Strong writing and interpersonal communication skills.

 

Special skills, knowledge, and abilities:

  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, memos, business correspondence, and manuals.
  • Ability to perform basic math, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and to interpret a variety of written, oral, and diagram instruction.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of written, oral, diagram or schedule form instruction.
  • Experience in conducting programs and grant-funded initiatives.
  • Ability to work with groups and individuals of varying ages and backgrounds.
