Job Description:

The Staff Counselor supports students by providing individual, couples, and group counseling. This person supports the campus through crisis intervention, educational outreach programming, training, consultation, and other support services. The position is for the 2022-2023 academic year; beginning in August and ending in May, with the potential opportunity for an extension in employment. Counseling Services resides in the division of Student Affairs.

The Staff Counselor position has a dual reporting line, reporting to the Interim Clinical Director for clinical supervision and the Dean for Title IX, EO, and Student Wellness
for administrative supervision.



DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides counseling services to MCLA students, including individual, couples and group counseling, crisis intervention, and case management.
  • Develops and provides educational outreach programs for residence halls, campus clubs and organizations, and special interest groups.
  • Provides consultation and referral services to the entire campus community, including faculty, staff, students, and parents.
  • Provides support to campus departments such as the Center for Student Success and Engagement, Residential Programs & Services, Athletics, Student Development, Vice President of Student Affairs, Associate Dean of Students, and others as appropriate.
  • Participates with other staff members in group supervision and in developing policies and procedures for Counseling Services.
  • Pursues opportunities for professional development and keeps up with relevant college student mental health trends and topics.
  • Participate in various campus committees and activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

  • Possess appropriate educational credentials and licensure in counseling for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts such as Licensed Clinical Social Work, Licensed Mental Health Counseling, or Licensed Counseling Psychologist.
  • Previous experience working in a college counseling center or clinical experience with the college population is preferred.
  • Knowledge of college student development and of the mental health issues specific to college students.
  • Knowledge of higher education principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Experience working with a diverse population in a fast-paced, stimulating environment.
  • Interest in collaborating and working effectively with professional staff, faculty, students, and administrative staff, both on and off campus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including oral, written, listening, and presentation skills.


Additional Information:

This is a one year, full-time, 9-month, benefit eligible counselor position in the APA bargaining unit. Salary range is $45,000 to $50,000, to commensurate to experience.
