Job Summary
The Directional Drill Operator/Locator is responsible for safely operating the directional drill to place product underground then locate the drill head to understand elevation changes and make decisions on depths to drill at to avoid hitting underground utilities. This position supports the Line team and works with personnel within the department.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate the drill rig efficiently
- Prepare job and drill so that the shot can be performed safely
- Pothole all utilities that will either be paralleled or crossed during the bore shot
- Verify existing utilities
- Fill water tanks with water
- Combine water with chemicals for boring according to the ground you are drilling in
- Locate drill head from point A to point B without hitting utilities at correct depth
- Hook up swivel, reamer, and pipe product that will be pulled back to complete bore shot
- Inspect and maintain job equipment.
- Confirm bore path with install foreman and drill operator (including walking the bore path).
- Perform job site analysis (JSA) including completion of paperwork.
- Ensure there are proper clearances to install the product per standards.
- Record the depth of the tool head as required.
- Ensure the drill head is in a good position at the exit pit to connect the product.
- Oversee laborers and/or crew member’s work and monitor time usage.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma, or equivalent.
- 1 year of relevant experience.
- CDL Class A license or obtain one within 90 days.
- OSHA 10 Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3 or more years of experience.
