Description
McDonogh School is in search of a Lower School Visual Arts Teacher with a passion for creating dynamic and student-centered educational experiences. A strong candidate possesses the ability to utilize a wide range of artistic media in order to develop students’ creative confidence, curiosity, and technical ability. It is essential that they possess a large breadth of artistic and educational experiences in addition to a dedication to their personal artistic practice. The candidate must be comfortable working in a high energy and fast-paced environment within which the facilitation and management of numerous student projects occur simultaneously. Additionally, the applicant needs to be willing and excited to work with a Lower School arts team that embraces process-based work and integrated educational practices for the advancement of an ever-evolving art program.This position will begin in August of 2023.
Essential Functions
- Inspire, engage, and encourage students in the study of visual arts
- Work collaboratively with colleagues within the Lower School visual and performing arts department, as well as any and all other Lower School departments
- Use professional growth opportunities to continually grow as a visual arts educator
- Plan and implement school and division-wide arts based initiatives (art shows, arts-itegrated performances, etc.)
- Become an engaged member of the McDonogh community by participating in school activities inside and outside of the Lower School arts department
- Overtly support and act in accordance with the school's mission
- Exhibit professional standards of presentation, punctuality, professional courtesy, and discretion
- Respond to the needs of the School, including but not limited to social emotional learning, assigned supervision, daily duties, and other areas as determined by the Lower School Head
Qualifications
A Master’s Degree in Visual Arts and/or Arts Education or equivalent experience. A minimum of 3 years teaching in an Elementary/Lower School setting .
Additional Experience
- Continual engagement in personal artistic practice
- Experience with arts integration and/or multidisciplinary teaching
- Experience working in a student-centered learning environment with practical experience related to problem-based learning
- Prior experience teaching visual arts at the Lower School level
- Proficiency in the use of many artistic media, including, but not limited to drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, digital media, and fibers.
- Subject matter expertise required

Working Conditions
Evening and weekend hours may be required from time to time. Lifting and carrying of equipment is not typical, but may be required on rare occasions. Lifting up to 25 pounds. Other working conditions include climbing stairs, walking around campus, sitting, standing, and significant computer use including extensive close use of a computer monitor. Reaching, grasping.
