Position Summary :
The Safety Specialist will work directly with the operations management team, field supervision and team members to provide leadership of the Company’s Culture of Safety 24/7 and implement the company’s overarching Safety and Health Management System. The position is responsible for leadership of our cultural and best management practices consistent with the Company’s Core Values.
** This role will support Central OH projects. **
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Cultivate and promote the Company’s vision of Zero At-Risk Behaviors and furthers the belief that all injuries, and incidents are preventable – At Work and At Home.
- Provide technical guidance and support to Managers, Supervisors and team members to facilitate conformance with Company and business unit safety and health objectives for the operations inside a large production steel mill.
- Assist in developing and implementing strategies for reducing and eliminating injuries, illness and other incidents in a manner that effectively ensures the attainment of business unit targets and objectives.
- Lead safety meetings and training programs to ensure the effective communication and implementation of company policy and procedures to support the Culture of Learning, Leadership, and Development.
- Conduct routine health and safety inspections to ensure conformance with Company best management practices; work with Managers, Supervisors and team members to identify corrective and preventative measures; and follow up to verify measures have been implemented and sustained.
- Assist in the investigation of injury, illness, environmental, and general liability incidents.
- Assist business unit leadership in the analysis of incidents of loss, and the identification and implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
- Provide analysis of information, data and trends and make appropriate recommendations that assist Company Managers and Supervisors in developing and implementing continuous improvement that facilitate the attainment of the business units targets and objectives.
- Independently initiate, perform, document and support others performing safety and health inspections, observations, and Safety 24/7 Conversations to further our Culture of Safety. actions.
- Exercise the positions authority to change and/or adjust work process and procedures as may be required to ensure the safety and health of team members, and others that may be impacted by our activities and operations.
- Analyze safety and health audit, evaluation, inspection, behavioral observation and incident data and prepare the data in such a manner that it can be used by the business unit’s management team to drive continuous improvement.
- Contribute to and lead in the development and implementation of Company and business unit level safety and health policies, procedures, and training programs.
- Communicate and coordinate effectively and professionally with the client management, supervision, and team members.
- Provide assistance to the Company's Human Resources and Worker’s Compensation / General Liability Insurance Department, and Legal Departments as needed.
- Serve as a point of contact for any federal, state or municipal safety or risk management authority and/or personnel, including but not limited to OSHA, when the Company Safety Manager is not available.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations as well as other federal/state/local municipality safety and health regulations.
- Ability to create an environment of open dialogue that invites input from all Team Members.
- Ability to effectively write, articulate, and generally communicate to engage Team Members, leadership, and others in a productive and credible manner.
- Ability to positively interact and influence front line supervisors and field personnel to create a Zero At-Risk Behaviors Mindset.
- Ability to think independently, communicate thoroughly and influence the implementation of the Company policies, programs and procedures.
- Sound decision-making skills based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience and judgement.
- Ability to influence and lead meetings with multiple attendees that create meaningful conversations and impactful results.
- Ability to work in high production environment (50 hours/week, including occasional nights and weekends) and respond in an efficient and effective manner.
- Possess a driving record acceptable to the Company, and the ability to work in Central Ohio and the surrounding areas.
Education and Experience:
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Safety and Health or equivalent combinations of technical training and experience.
- Seeking three (3) to five (5) years of Construction Safety and Health Experience.
- Preferred - OSHA 500 Construction Outreach Trainer credential, or other Professional Credential (STS-C, CHST, ASP, CSP).
- Preferred - Familiarity with or willingness to gain technical knowledge and skill in all aspects of heavy industrial maintenance and construction.
