Overview:
The Data Analytics Manager is responsible for building and leading a team of high-performing data engineers, scientists and analysts in McGuireWoods Consulting's MWAccel Data Analytics team. Partnering closely with McGuireWoods LLP and the firm's clients, the Data Analytics team provides innovative data-driven solutions in support of both client and internal firm projects. This person will work with cross-departmental teams to define problems that can be solved and insights that can be gained through metrics and quantitative models related to effective use of internal data and external data. This is a high visibility role, so the ideal candidate will be comfortable communicating and building relationships with peers and leaders at all levels. Daily operations will include oversight of analytical needs, from planning through execution. This position is the primary contact for all data analytics related issues and escalations. Due to the sensitivity of the data content, a high level of integrity and discretion is required to ensure confidentiality.

MWAccel has three service lines. The first one involves the client-facing and client-billable data analytics work. The second is the legal operations work for clients. The third involves internal work — understanding how we can improve the delivery of legal services, how we run the firm, how we identify and adopt technology, and how we spend our dollars.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and lead a high-performing team, providing leadership, coaching and guidance.
  • Data analytic responsibilities include working with lawyers and staff to identify opportunities to solve problems and gain insight to client and other firm issues. This role directs data analytics activities to assist lawyers and other legal staff in proper and efficient utilization of data to bring understanding to complex situations.
  • Translate business requirements and unstructured business issues into data analytic problems and solutions.
  • Develop data preparation, sample design, identify appropriate analytic and statistical methodology, and document process and results.
  • Analyze and model structured data using advanced statistical methods, and implement software/algorithms to perform analysis.
  • Perform machine learning, natural language, and statistical analysis methods as appropriate, such as classification, collaborative filtering, association rules, sentiment analysis, topic-modeling, time-series analysis.
  • Perform explanatory data analysis, generate and test working hypotheses, prepare and analyze historical data, identify patterns and interpret results, and be able to explain to all levels of stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the firm's IT department and other key stakeholders to create and implement a data strategy for the firm.
Qualifications:
  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a technical or quantitative field; Master or MBA degree preferred. JD desirable but not required.
  • 10 years of data analytics experience in a professional services firm or similar environment.
  • 5 years managing a team of data scientists.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships at all levels.
  • Proven interpersonal and consultative communication skills with well-developed presentation skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to explain and translate technical data analysis approaches and results to businesspeople.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, develop, lead and execute projects, especially in an agile development environment.
  • Ability to recognize and anticipate cost factors of technology.
  • Ability to provide and promote forward adaptability.
  • Experience with the application of advanced data analytics, including data mining, predictive modeling, risk-based optimization and advanced operations research.
  • Detailed knowledge of operations in one or more industries and a strong understanding of business processes, including business operations, business delivery models and business revenue models.
  • Strong background in mathematics, statistics, engineering and/or informatics, and working with large data sets.
  • Experience with databases, commercial BI platforms, and writing SQL, Python, Java and/or R is preferred.
