Represents company on regulatory matters and disputes. Analyzes proposed and established legislation, prepares legal documents, and reviews and/or prepares company policies to ensure compliance with such legislation. Advises management on legal and regulatory matters and ensures compliance to protect company against legal liability.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Assume primary responsibility for providing legal advice to Environmental Health and Safety Team and Food Safety Team, with a focus on environmental compliance and developing food-related regulations.
- Provide interpretation and advice on regulatory matters. Draft or revise operational policies and procedures, as necessary, to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Effectively manage outside counsel in advising on regulatory matters and defending regulatory actions.
- Advise management on litigation strategy.
- Advise management on a full range of commercial legal issues including, but not limited to, legal risk management and new product legal risk.
- Perform legal research, evaluate, and assess legal risks involving the organization.
- Develop strategic goals and work with management to implement those goals.
- Draft and review various contracts, agreements, and other third-party service-related documents.
- Monitor developments in national, state, and local laws, and educate senior management, merchandising and operations professionals.
- Oversee investigations of legal and regulatory matters and provide advice and counsel on handling such situations.
- Create training materials and provide training opportunities on legal and regulatory issues to management, merchandising and operations professionals.
- Accept and handle other matters assigned by the General Counsel or the attorney’s direct manager.
MINIMUM SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- A Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree and be licensed to practice in at least one state.
- Seven or more years of legal experience, to include experience interacting and negotiating with regulatory personnel and providing advice to clients regarding compliance with applicable laws/regulations.
- Experience with environmental laws or food safety laws preferred.
- Business experience preferred.
- Integrity, confidence, together with good interpersonal skills, and the ability to be persuasive and relentless in reinforcing the best interests of the company.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both other attorneys and with individuals not having a legal background.
- Ability to travel as needed.
- Basic proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
