Lead Technical Writer
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lead Technical Writer is responsible for taking complex, technical information and translating it into an easily understandable format, per customer guidelines. The Lead Technical Writer will work closely with experienced writers and other internal employees to interpret contractual specifications, engineering drawings, reports, and other data to ensure production of technical documentation that complies with customer requirements. The Lead Technical Writer will spearhead training and answering questions from employees regarding contractual specifications. May communicate with customer and/or customer’s representatives throughout the project, as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Writes and edits other writer’s technical documents/manuals according to customer specifications.
- Troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, and/or pneumatic systems on heavy-duty equipment.
- Researches existing data to maximize use of previously developed text and/or illustrations.
- Drafts text materials to ensure text and illustrations are completed and coordinated per final product requirements.
- Documents and archives technical data over long periods in an efficient, established method to aid in future related projects.
- Tracks and records time spent on projects.
- Communicates status of work and any requirements for additional information to management.
- Completes assigned tasks according to established deadlines, customer specifications, and company policies and procedures.
- Follows all established safety procedures and reports violations to appropriate personnel; may make recommendations about safety procedures.
- Trains department employees.
- Reviews project requirements to comply with customer specifications and agreements.
- Helps communicate project status and deadlines with customer and other internal and external personnel.
- Helps allocate resources to projects and accurately estimates number of hours needed to complete current and future projects.
- Coordinates with Project Lead to help manage phases of the project.
- Performs any other job-related instructions, as requested, with reasonable accommodation.
Lead Technical Writer
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education:
- High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
- Associate degree in a technical or mechanical field, or equivalent work experience is required.
- Associate degree in Automotive Repair or related field is preferred.
- Bachelor of Science (BS) or Arts (BA) degree in business, engineering, technical field, or related degree is preferred.
Experience:
- Four to six (4-6) years experience writing complete, complex technical documents, including organizing the document and working with internal and external personnel (e.g., agencies, customer) is required.
- Previous military and/or mechanical aptitude/experience is preferred.
- Previous experience for the Department of Defense (DoD) is preferred.
- Experience troubleshooting/diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and/or pneumatic systems is preferred.
- Experience using Onboard-diagnostics (OBD) II, CAT ET, Allison DOC, Bendix Diagnostic,
Dearborn, WABCO Toolbox, or other Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) diagnostic tools is preferred.
Technical Experience:
- Intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and
Microsoft PowerPoint is required.
- Intermediate level of proficiency with desktop publishing tools is required.
- Intermediate to advanced technical knowledge of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic, and/or aeronautical systems is required.
- Intermediate knowledge of related fields, including illustrating, provisioning, and logistic support analysis is preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics is required.
Certification/Licensure:
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification is preferred.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $55,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
