The mission of The University of Texas M. D. The primary purpose of the Scientific Illustrator position is to develop high-quality figures and images that accurately portray the science included in multi-project grant proposals. The position will provide illustrations to faculty, staff and administrative leadership. The data figures and illustrations will be used for grant applications, progress reports, publications and will be available for national meeting poster content of diverse scope. The incumbent will provide both pre-award and post-award support; review requests for illustrations and ensure compliance and alignment with program guidelines. The incumbent provides consultation and assessment of faculty needs, mobilizes techniques for minimizing costs and maximizing product quality. This position will provide creative input and recommendations to MDACC faculty on a variety of projects. Knowledge of biological sciences will be applied to translate medical, scientific, and technical language into easily understood illustrations.

Key Functions
  • Assists faculty with data analysis and visual representation of data to enhance communication through scientific venues such as grants, publications, presentations, posters etc
  • With minimal direction, creates and executes scientific design concepts and develops artwork for a variety of materials and media
  • Strong oral and written communication skills In-depth experience illustrating science for both technical reviewers and the public as well as writing science proposals for government agencies including the National Institutes of Health
  • Experience working in a scientific research environment. Understanding of the role of research

and grant funding in a major research university.
  • Collaborates with manager and faculty for project approvals.
  • Collaborates with key project personnel in the development of graphics and collateral pieces.
  • Collaborates with various departments to ensure that brand standards are present and consistent in all material and communications, both internally and externally.
  • Serves as liaison with printers, mail houses and other outside vendors as needed to ensure timely and quality deliverables.
  • Oversees multiple projects and deadlines without compromising quality and value of design work; ensures appropriate attention to detail and focus on follow-up.
  • Participates effectively in creative brainstorming sessions with faculty and administrators
  • Provides creative approval as needed for internal and outsourced projects.
  • Organizes and maintains electronic documents, images and graphic files for ease of use,

transmittal and production.
  • Ensures own creative work from concept to pre-press and post-production maintains original

design intent, messaging and quality standards. This includes all printed and digital collateral.
  • Makes recommendations to faculty to increase cost efficiencies of print production.
  • Recommends solutions to technical, creative, and process challenges; creates and edits unique and creative visual assets that maximize audience engagement while leveraging traditional techniques.
  • Seeks out and applies new and current knowledge of visual media technology and techniques.
  • Other duties as assigned


Education
Required:
PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Experience
Required:
Three years scientific illustration experience.

Preferred: Advanced degree in biological sciences. Specialized knowledge of cancer research. Knowledge of MDACC policies and procedures relating to research, and research facilities, as well as knowledge of campus structure, research programs, databases, and systems. Experience in oncology-related scientific illustration.
