Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Board of County Commissioners, is responsible for Civil Engineering tasks including analysis, design, contract administration and construction management.
Essential Functions
- Design and prepare plans for drainage and highway projects
- Write contract documents and determine quantities for bidding and cost estimates
- Review plans prepared by consultants and provide comments
- Review bridge inspection reports and prepare mitigation plans
- Review and comment on Development applications such as Development Engineering Plan submittals, building permits, grading permits, etc.
- Review and comment on Planning applications such as plat documents, planned developments, rezone requests, vacation of easements/right-of-way, etc.
- Coordinate engineering projects with county departments and other agencies
- Interpret intent of ordinances, statutes and monitor compliance
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Design experience in streets, drainage, water and sanitary sewer systems
- Civil engineering highway and bridge construction theories, principles, and design practices
- An understanding of planning concepts such as land use, zoning, platting, etc.
- Ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize work activities to meet schedules and deadlines
- Knowledge of computer software and technology
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills
Examination, Testing, and Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
- Professional Engineer License preferred
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid South Dakota Driver’s License
- Successful competition in written and/or oral interview
