Description BenefitsDepartment InformationEngineering a world of possibilitiesThe Office of Communications and Marketing is seeking a Media Relations Specialist to help enhance our visibility and contribute to the top-of-mind strategy for Colorado School of Mines.

This is an opportunity for a media-savvy communicator who wants to tell interesting stories that engage, excite and educate audiences.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in public relations, journalism, or media relations, with demonstrated experience in building and maintaining relationships with members of the media.

This role will be a strong writer and editor, and be responsible for developing and implementing media strategies to promote the initiatives, achievements and events happening at Mines.

Additionally, the role will serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries, coordinating interviews, press releases and other media opportunities.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, this role requires excellent communication skills, creativity and the ability to work collaboratively with internal stakeholders across departments.

The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping the narrative of Colorado School of Mines and raising its profile regionally, nationally and internationally.

A flexible work arrangement is available for this role, though the majority of work will be on campus in Golden in order to staff interviews, train faculty and be a point of contact for media.

Description of JobPRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESMedia relations and writing Help create and execute strategic media plans that positively position Mines, working closely with the Director of Communications and Chief Marketing Officer to craft a consistent narrative in line with institutional priorities Proactively pitch stories, respond to media requests and manage requests for information Arrange and staff in-person interviews and manage the planning of and oversight of press events Write timely, accurate and engaging press releases and media advisories Establish and maintain institutional relationships with journalists representing local, regional, national and international print, web, radio and television outlets Contribute to university emergency / crisis communications through the management of on-site media and information requests, helping to assemble and organize press and serving as a liaison to local public information officers / agenciesExpert engagement and training Cultivate and maintain relationships with internal subject matter experts Maintain and grow an experts list / media hub Provide media training, counsel resources and interview prep for Mines faculty, leadership and students Review, revise and pitch op-eds in support of subject matter experts Generate potential interview opportunities with relevant reportersMedia and issues monitoring Maintain media databases and lists utilizing various media monitoring tools, including MuckRack Monitor current and emerging news topics and identify opportunities for Mines experts to contribute in a timely manner Detect public relations issues as they emerge and address them directly, in consultation with Director of Communications and Chief Marketing Officer Track media coverage and report out on coverage resultsSalary and Benefits$ 68,000 - 72,000 annual salaryMines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
