What are the responsibilities and job description for the Biobank Research Technician position at MedStar Health?

  • Job Summary
    • Serves as an active member of the team of tissue biobanking procurement establishing and maintaining of the “MedStar Health Cancer Library ” at MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI). Responsible for routine collection of a comprehensive set of biological specimens (tissue, blood, urine, etc.) and complete clinical data from patients undergoing various organ resection procedures (surgery, biopsy, etc) at the sites of tissue collection: MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar Washington Hospital Center and other MedStar Health Network Hospitals.
       
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education/Training
      • Bachelor’s Degree (e.g., MSN, MPH, MBA) and/or equivalent work experiences such that the objectives of the position are equaled.

    • Experience
      • 1 year of experience in a clinical and/or research setting, experience in contact with patients and physicians, experience in oncology, clinical research and/or surgery; must to be able to review patients medical chart and analyze the information to be entered in the patient interview form.

      • No special certification, registration or license required.
    •  
    • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
      • Excellent verbal skills, with confidence interviewing patient for the collection of clinical data.
         
  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Consistently demonstrates support for compliance in the performance of job duties and responsibilities by a) developing and maintaining knowledge of, and performing job functions in compliance with, rules, regulations, policies, and statutes that affect his/her job; b) maintaining knowledge of and performing job functions in compliance with MedStar Health and MedStar Health Research Institute policies and procedures; and c) reporting compliance concerns in an appropriate and timely manner.
    • Biospecimen Acquisition, Delivery, and Processing: Observes surgery and documents surgical and anesthesiological data points, including resection times while in operating room; Works closely with anesthesiologist to obtain blood and urine samples during surgery; Receives resected tumor/tissue from surgeon/care provider and responsible for timely transport of tissue to pathology; Works closely with pathology team to obtain all excess tissue available for research and plans; Plans and performs dissection of tissue specimen according to standard operating procedures; Processes tissue for storage and distribution to partner sites, collaborators and sponsor; Transports blood, urine and tissue to the central laboratories for processing and storage.
    • Clinical Annotation of Biospecimen: Reviews MedStar EMR to confirm data accuracy and abstract outcomes data; Works with Indivumed teams across many sites nationally and internationally to ensure all data is coded correctly for global database, updates database regularly; Registers tissue samples and associated data in Georgetown, MedStar and Indivumed databases; Regularly performs quality assurance and control checks.

    • Laboratory Support: Provides basic training for and oversees the work of new employees, medical students, interns and new research fellows; Responsible for ensuring freezer temperatures are adequately monitored 24/7; Responsible for general upkeep in the lab; Ensures trainings and certifications are up to date, including but not limited to: all CITI (HIPAA and Human Subjects), IATA/DOT certifications, and all safety trainings; Supports various prospective tissue collections, tissue shipments, and tissue/data release requests; Coordinates with investigators and other research teams at GU and WHC; Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate for the position and area.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Responsible for the identification and consent of eligible patients: Screens EMRs to identify potentially eligible patients; Works with surgical staff to coordinate patient interactions; Interacts with patients to obtain consent and clinical data acquisition; Reviews EMR and perioperative reports to complete clinical data abstraction.
