  • Job Summary
    • Under the direction of the Vice President, Chief Quality Officer,  the Director of Process Improvement is responsible for leading process improvements and culture change, driving hospital-wide performance improvement using Lean/6-Sigma methodologies, tools, and other techniques to optimize processes, eliminate waste, improve quality, and reduce costs. Develops people to solve problems using a data driven approach to improve performance and promote Lean thinking to foster a culture of continuous improvement. Oversees a team of Process Improvement Specialists, and partnering with Operational and Quality leadership, will align process improvement initiatives with organizational vision, mission, and strategic goals. 
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education/Training
      • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or other Engineering/analytical equivalent background.  Master’s degree preferred.

    • Experience
      •  Minimum of 7 years of related experience in the implementation and management of process improvement/lean techniques and tools. Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects/people in a leadership role.  Excellent presentation skills and communications skills. Accomplished at relationship management.  Strong background in Lean/6-Sigma methodologies and tools.

      • Approximately six to twelve months to gain familiarity with the Hospital environment, department routines and procedures, and the full range of job duties.

        INTERNAL CONTACTS:  Internal contacts necessary to effectively advise, consult or counsel others to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas or actions.
        INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:  Work assignments are generally received in the form of results expected, due dates, and general approach to be taken.
  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • 1. Organizes and coordinates PI department projects, including organizing and delegating work in an effective manner, establishing appropriate time frames for completion of work, and providing necessary leadership to ensure effective work results

      2. Collects, analyzes, and interprets qualitative and quantitative data that provides clinical and hospital leaders meaningful information, have keen analytic insights and capability to  translate analytic findings to a non-analytic audience

      3. Presents complex information such as data driven analysis and reports, methods, and other results in a logical and understandable format to a wide variety of audiences

      4. Works collaboratively with members of the President’s Center Executive Team and MedStar Washington leaders to identify and establish process improvement priorities, resource allocation decisions and project timelines 

      5. Selects, develops, manages, and evaluate direct reports: ensure performance appraisals are completed in timely fashion

      6. Facilitates improvement and redesign, including administrative and clinical workflows

      7. Educates and coaches leaders in adoption of lean methodologies, tools, and processes

      8. Tracks project deliverables and monitors and reports on progress of projects and appropriately escalate roadblocks through regular update meetings with Senior Leadership

      9. Develops and communicates ongoing process improvement/lean management strategies and ensure alignment with MedStar Washington’s mission, vision, and values and with other hospital-wide initiatives
