Job Summary

Phlebotomist will be utilized in the following settings: out-patient, in-patient and outreach (i.e. nursing homes,assisted living and hospital organized outreach opportunities) and on-call. Performs all aspects of phlebotomy functions and specimen collections to include venous and capillary collections and glucose testing, while following the proper standards and practices. Verifies patient insurance and performs basic data entry to register and accession in and out-patient orders while complying with the MedStar Laboratory Compliance Plan.
Minimum Qualifications

Education/Training

High school graduation or equivalent; completion of Hospital approved phlebotomy course.

Experience

6 months phlebotomy experience preferred.

License/Certification/Registration

Phlebotomy certification preferred. Valid driver's license in the State of Maryland and dependable vehicle for transportation.

Basic computer skills. Verbal and written communication skills.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
-
Collects blood from nursing homes and private homes according to laboratory policies and procedures.
-
Complies with MedStar Laboratory Compliance Plan by ensuring the following: medically necessary diagnosis is submitted (ICD-10 Code/Descriptive Diagnosis), physician signature, determine Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN), obtains the patient signature, if necessary prior to specimen collection.

Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

Greets patients in a courteous and professional manner. Verifies correct patient identification in accordance with hospital policy. Performs phlebotomy proficiently (skin and heel punctures) on all patient types. Places physician orders correctly into LIS. Accurately labels specimens immediately after procedure is completed according to laboratory policies and procedures.

Labels and records test tubes, logs procedures in a log book, and schedules procedures as necessary. Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed.

Maintains a good attendance record. Maintains effective working relationships with other departments and coworkers.

Maintains test tray and working area in a sanitary condition. Assists with the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and requests supplies as necessary.

Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.

Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.

Participates or assists in training new associates.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Responds to telephone calls with courtesy and efficiency.
