What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Laboratory Technician - PRN / Core Evenings/ Core Lab position at MEDSTAR HEALTH?
General Summary of Position
Conducts routine tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease and performs related duties following established standards and practices.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Collects statistical data, cost analysis, and daily tallies for reports.
Consults with supervisor, pathologist regarding difficult analysis or abnormal findings.
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
Maintains inventory supply, stocks and maintains neat, orderly work area.
May perform specimen procurement as required.
Operates, calibrates and conducts performance checks and performs routine maintenance on lab equipment. Recognizes problems and notifies supervisor.
Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required.
Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Participates in surveys, conducts established quality control of procedures, evaluates results per established protocol, implements corrective action when indicated, and ensures accuracy of test results. Recognizes problems and notifies section supervisor.
Performs a wide variety of routine procedures following prescribed protocol and using manual or automated methods; calculates and reports results as established.
Performs comparison studies for linearity, precision, accuracy, etc., per protocol.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Prepares, evaluates, and labels reagents, media, etc., per procedure.
Processes specimens ensuring accuracy of identification; confidentiality of information; and appropriate preparation, storage, and transportation. May perform specimen procurement as required.
Trains new associates and students per protocol.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Associate's degree from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program required or
60 semester hours including 24 semester hours of medical lab technology, required or
60 semester hrs including 24 hrs of science that includes 6 hrs chemistry, 6 hrs biology and 12 hrs chemistry, biology, required or
or medical lab tech in any combination plus laboratory training that includes either completion of a clinical lab training program required or
3 months training in each specialty in which high complexity testing is performed. required

Licenses and Certifications
ASCP - Medical Technologist ASCP certification preferred.
