What are the responsibilities and job description for the Officer Unarmed PRN position at MEDSTAR HEALTH?

General Summary of Position
Ensures a safe environment for our patients, staff and visitors. Patrols hospital property, responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions, objects or persons which may impact the security and/or safety of patients, associates, physicians, visitors, or vendors, and responds according to established policies, procedures and regulations. Security Officers are essential associates in a 24/7 environment and may be required to be flexible with scheduling and work "off-shifts.


Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED Required or
  • equivalent. Required and
  • Associate's degree Preferred

Experience

  • 1-2 years Related security or law enforcement experience. Required or
  • 1-2 years In lieu of the related experience, an internal candidate who has 1 year of medstar tenure may be considered. Preferred and
  • Prior experience in healthcare (or related field with a patient-first, customer-first mission). Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid driver's license. Required and
  • Basic Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification from IAHSS. within 60 Days Preferred and
  • BLS (CPR) certification Required and
  • Must successfully complete all MedStar initial training related to violence prevention, de-escalation and crisis prevention intervention. Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and thoughtful during a crisis.
  • Ability to assist in de-escalating situations with strong emotions and conflict.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Immediately responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
  • Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility as directed. May be required to patrol the hospital campus/grounds via security motor vehicle or bicycle.
  • Monitors security and appearance of lobbies, waiting areas, elevators, and entrances.
  • Prepares and submits reports and logs of all incidents, investigations, and activities. Maintains department records, reports, and files as required.
  • Proficient in and utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to ensure staff, patients, visitors and all others remain safe, calm and respected while onsite.
  • Provides assistance for way-finding, parking, deliveries and other requested information for the hospital and MedStar affiliates.
  • Responds to security and medical code calls. Investigates incidents and accidents. Gathers information and evidence. Notifies appropriate authorities or superiors and calls for back-up assistance as necessary.
  • Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings and trials.
  • Works cross-functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
  • Conducts foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds, as required. Observes and monitors conditions, objects, or persons which might require police action. Controls access to and inspects packages of those leaving buildings. Reports all safety, security, and law violations.
  • Collects and secures patient valuables and lost-and-found articles.
  • Monitors camera surveillance system.
  • Responds to circumstances where the exercise of law enforcement authority may be required.
  • Interacts with visitors and maintains designated security posts throughout the facility as directed.
  • Ensures quality outcomes for the security department by communicating with security staff and the public.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
