Job Summary

Uses own transportation to drive to local nursing homes and perform the A.M. phlebotomy draw followingestablished standards and practices. Couriers collected specimens back to hospital to receive and processesusing basic computer data entry skills. Complies with the Medstar Laboratory Compliance Plan.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Training
-
High school graduation or equivalent. Completion of a phlebotomy course preferred.

Experience
-
1 year phlebotomy experience.

License/Certification/Registration
-
Phlebotomy certification preferred. Valid driver's license in the State of Maryland anddependable vehicle for transportation.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
-
Accurately orders and receipt-verifies patient test requested in the LIS system.
-
Accurately registers patients in LIS system according to procedure. Consistently uses Medicare Scrubber Program for Medicare patients having tests ordered that are defined as needing medically justified diagnoses. Obtains medically justified diagnoses from facility if a good diagnosis is not originally provided before ordering tests.

Chooses proper collection tube, and carefully performs venipuncture on properly identified patient. Labels specimens at bedside according to procedure.

Keeps assigned nursing facility stocked with necessary supplies including phlebotomy, as well as containers for facility-collected specimens and paper supplies for report printing and test requests.

Labels specimens with computer generated labels.

Maintains effective working relationships with staff at nursing homes, coworkers, and other laboratory staff. Makes sure proper documentation is written on facility logs and requisitions.

Maintains established department goals, objectives, policies and procedures, quality and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

Obtains positive identification of patient by matching the name on the requisition to the name on the patient's armband. If patient does not have an armband ID, obtains signature of RN or LPN verifying patient's identity. If positive identification is not obtained, does not draw patient.

Participates in departmental QA program set up to ensure accurate test ordering by having requisition slips and orders checked by coworker, and checks slips and orders of coworker each day.

Performs other duties as assigned.
