Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelors degree in Health Information Management or related field
Licenses/Certifications:
- Registered Health Information Management Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) and
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or Certified Outpatient Coding Specialist (COC) required or American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) or (CPC) Certified Professional Coder.
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
- Minimum of five (5) years coding or coding review and three (3) years progressive leadership

Principal Accountabilities
- Provides direction and manages the day-to-day functions within the coding department for all facilities
- Supervises coding staff including the coding coordinators, coding auditors, and coding staff.
- Monitors unbilled reports for un-coded discharges to reduce accounts receivable days; monitor coding workflow.
- Coordinates and monitor all coding business to include hospital outpatient, inpatient, and specialized coding; monitors the accuracy and quality of coding assignments, collect and summarize coding data and ensure timely submission of internal coding audit findings; coordinate and implement changes resulting from internal or external coding audits.
- Establishes and monitor continuing coding education to ensure coding quality and evaluate potential risk factors in coding and documentation.
- Educate and train coding staff, acts as technical coding expert and mentor to staff.
- Promotes recruitment and retention of certified staff in coding positions.
- Develops and maintains system-wide coding policies and procedures to ensure compliance with external regulatory requirements.
- Enforces the coding policies and procedures; conducts trend analyses to identify patterns and variations in coding and CMI.
- Provides consulting services in the area of coding to physicians and departments throughout the organization.
- Keeps abreast of new technology in coding and stays informed about future issues impacting the coding functions, acts as a liaison for other departments regarding coding questions.
- Assists in department budget and identifies and recommends opportunities to decrease costs and improve service.
- Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
