As Vice President of Engineering for the Embedded Business Unit, you will lead and mentor engineering leaders responsible for the development of sensor and effector processing systems. You will proactively identify problems and generate solutions, while collaborating with leaders from other functions and divisions to drive execution of innovative solutions while meeting business objectives. As a successful Vice President of Engineering for the Embedded Business Unit you will develop the trust and respect of teammates, leadership and external partners, fostering a culture of teamwork and collaboration across all sites.

Major Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering development and execution across all sites in the Business Unit. Oversee engineering work performed at all sites, collaborate with Business Unit GM and engineering teams. Identify and resolve potential issues.
  • Provide input to the Division Strategic Operating Plan based upon engineering execution and technology needs. Provide engineering support and guidance to Division VP.
  • Seamlessly collaborate with Division’s Technology lead and Product Lead and assure execution of Product development and Technology strategies and ideas.
  • Collaborate with the Product Development team to align engineering technology with product development milestones.
  • Build a strong team of engineering leaders. Develop succession plan. Identify next level leaders and provide appropriate growth opportunities. Mentor engineering leaders from multiple business units.
  • Grow and shape the engineering organization. Identify future needs, develop and implement plans to proactively address.
  • Manage and prioritize engineering resource utilization across multiple sites based upon business level strategy, business commitments, and near-term program needs.
  • Co-ordinate cross-business unit needs within the division, including tools and technology.
  • Work with the Sales, Operations, and Program Management teams to capture strategic programs and ensure that the BU has the capabilities required to execute current and future programs. Ensure consistent program execution.
  • Identify and assess engineering risks and opportunities at the BU level and implement corrective action.
  • As asked, participate in M&A projects. Support assessment of potential acquisitions. Lead integration of newly acquired company’s engineering organizations.
  • Implement corporate engineering process. Identify strengths and weaknesses and support ongoing process improvement initiatives. Implement Embedded DevSecOps process.
  • Implement consistent metrics analysis to drive continuous improvement and more informed decision making. Collaborate with IT to automate metrics collection.
  • Participate in global engineering leadership team to drive best practices across all of Mercury engineering.
  • Collaborate with quality organization for root cause corrective action analysis of identified quality issues.
  • Collaborate with CTO organization for technology development plans. Host periodic IRAD/technology reviews.
Required Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of recent experience leading engineering organization serving aerospace and defense.
  • Experience in developing and delivering sensor and effector computing solutions as individual contributor or engineer manager/supervisor/leader
  • Current on cutting edge technologies and advancement in embedded architectures, modular, open system architectures such open VPX, Sosa, CMOSS
  • Proven experience building proactive and success-oriented engineering teams
  • Proven experience in leading technical teams in support of program capture and competing for new business
  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering management experience, with at least 5 years of experience leading cross-discipline, cross-site organizations.
  • Experience leading multiple engineering disciplines (e.g. software, firmware, electrical, mechanical, systems, etc…)
  • Experience with continuous improvement and lean engineering principles
  • Practical analysis experience with engineering metrics, analysis and usage
  • Ability to obtain and maintain, at minimum, Secret level security clearance
  • B.S. degree or higher in Engineering discipline
Preferred Experience

  • Broad engineering development experience across multiple disciplines
  • Development and delivery of secure processing solutions
Knowledge of and practical experience working in Agile environments with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery pipeline
  • Understanding of finance and business
  • Engineering management experience in a matrix organization is a plus
  • Six sigma / lean implementation experience in engineering development. Strong experience with and understanding of problem-solving techniques
  • Existing Secret level security clearance
  • Analytical, out-of-box thinker

  • Ability to work well in fast paced, high dynamic environment with highly energized and knowledgeable teams
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives concurrently
  • Ability to work well a cross-functional, matrix management environment, can lead distributed teams without direct reporting relationship
  • Strong collaboration skills. Ability to form collaborative relationships with lead engineers and engineering managers at all sites. A team builder.
  • Exceptional leadership, coaching, and management skills
  • Assertive work ethic, sets a strong leadership example, recognizes that leadership and management are different
  • Ability to travel up to 50%
