What are the responsibilities and job description for the RCP ECMO Specialist position at Mercy Health BSMH?
Summary:
This position is responsible to aseptically set up, prime, manage and discontinue ECLS systems on all patient populations, ages, complex diagnoses while in a full range of patient care settings including surgical, cardiovascular, pediatric cardiothoracic and neonatal intensive care units, adult and pediatric cardiac cath labs, adult and pediatric operating room settings.
Essential Job Functions:
- Participates in the continual development, implementation and use of clinical operating procedures of both
- BSMH/MSVMC and ELSO guidelines directly for the ECMO program.
- Ensures appropriate patient care through the continuous monitoring of the ECMO circuit, related technology,
- and patient status.
- Develop and maintain consistent and comprehensive communication protocols/structure that will interface
- and ensure timely communication with all members of the ECMO team, including but not exclusive to the
- ECMO team, medical director, intensivists, perfusion, nursing unit(s), operating room(s), ancillary clinical
- support departments, quality, accreditation, risk, finance, administration, professional development, spiritual
- care/mission, etc.
- Coordinates with perfusionist(s) to ensure proper functioning of ECMO equipment and adequacy of supplies.
- May serve as an expert on operation of ECMO circuit and can operate the circuit as needed. Ensures safe and
- proper set-up of ECMO equipment as well as involvement with troubleshooting during ECMO runs.
- Serves as clinical leader in ECMO technology. Ensure all staff is trained both initially and concurrently on
- EMCO standards including perfusion technology as well as ongoing technical and didactic competencies.
- Works within the scope of practice outlined by and maintains certification credential through the
- Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) is an international non-profit consortium of health care
- institutions who are dedicated to the development and evaluation of novel therapies for support of failing
- organ systems; along within the critical care registered nursing provision scope of practice.
- Create quality initiatives that support competency of resources, safe environment, regulatory expectations
- and a reduction of risks with unique plans for all areas of nursing practice; knowledgeable of all regulatory
- expectations and achieves regulatory compliance for nursing.

Employment Qualifications:
Required Minimum Education: 4 year/ Bachelors Degree Specialty/Major: Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Care
Preferred Education: Graduate Degree (Masters)
Licensure/Certification Required: Registered Respiratory Care Practitioner
Licensure/Certification Preferred: Licensed Respiratory Therapist
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Years and Type of Experience: 3 years critical care ICU experience; reasonable knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and surgery pertaining to ECMO.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required: Experience learning new procedures and applications of ECLS support; Completion of ECMO specialist training course and annual refresher course; obtain bedside competency within 12 weeks post-course; BLS; ACLS or PALS certification.
