Overview:
Responsible for patient education of financial policies. Provides ongoing support for point-of-service initiatives; focusing on uninsured, underinsured, and credit risk patients. Provides support to patients in completing financial statements and/or loan applications, establishing payment plans, and collection of payments. The Financial Counselor must demonstrate computer proficiency and specific technical skills in reporting, tracking, and documenting patient encounters. They must exhibit role model behavior and provide excellent customer service at all times to both internal and external customers. The Patient Financial Counselor must perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Education necessary to communicate effectively in written and verbal form. Education or equivalent to demonstrate working knowledge of business principles, especially accounting concepts.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of banking, accounting, and math principles.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications and the internet.
- Must have ability to work under stress, meet deadlines and perform all daily assignments with consistent accuracy meeting the minimum set of accuracy requirements.
- Ability to use logic in determining correct document processing, and to read, understand and follow written and oral instructions, functioning independently with a minimum of supervision.
- Required to maintain strict confidentiality of patient and hospital information. Above average communication skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements:
- Must have regular and punctual attendance, vision capable of viewing computer monitors, forms, text and numbers for prolonged periods.
- Ability to perform date entry for prolonged periods as required
Equipment Used:
- Computer, Fax, Scanner, 10-key, Laser Printer, Multi-line Telephone, Credit Card Machine, Copier.
Preferred Experience:
- Knowledge of credit and collections, insurance billing/verification and follow-up preferred. Knowledge of healthcare payment methodology including Medicare, Medicaid, HMOs, PPOs and secondary payers preferred.
